Help me understand

duke of aim that link to the thread answered the question. thanks alot. bbb

the link to this vernon elliot bank shot was posted in onepocket.org by skin. it shows the object ball going backward cross side. could someone exlain the physics how is it possible. thanks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ql-vXWEA_TU
The cue ball has so much outside spin that the part of the cue ball that hits the object ball is actually moving backwards on the table relative to the direction of the cue ball's motion. If the balls are dirty enough, there is sufficient friction to throw the object ball back into the pocket.

A similar shot is: put the cue ball in the jaws of a foot pocket. Put the object ball on the foot spot. Cut the object ball back into the other foot pocket. If you work out the geometry, this is a 93-degree cut. Level cue, outside english with a little draw.

Thank you Bob!!!! This whole time I have been cutting the ball at 93.7 degrees. :)

Bob,
Here is some video of you making the shot from the 2008 Derby City Classic.

Bob Jewett - Vernon Elliott's Impossible Bank Shot

I also have some video of you lining up the shot and making adjustments after your missed attempts. I think people could learn a lot if you would explain those adjustments. If you need a copy of the original video, let me know.

My method of adjustment is to move my bridge hand a little. My looped index finger is pressed against the cushion. I hit as far out on the object ball as I can without miscuing. The cue ball is on the second diamond from the pocket. If I keep all of that fixed (and the elevation and speed as well) and I only adjust the distance of my bridge from the cue ball, I change the aim slightly. In a way, I'm using the same technique that Joe Tucker does in his video, but he is using a mechanical fixture to hold the stick.

bob thanks for your reply and to everyone else. i'll give a follow up when (if? no i should think positive:smile:) i make it.
