Kilby Travel Cue

Some of you may have seen my previous post in which I showcased my Capone and Buss cues. That solved my problem for those two oft traveled to destinations. I also travel to trade shows etc. and like to play a bit, in whatever town I find myself. On those occasions I take along a 3-piece travel cue that fits nicely in my checked suitcase. Ron Kilby is a cuemaker from Oregon. Checkout <www.caromcues.com> He is better known in the 3C world, but builds pool cues also. The main woods are Gabon ebony, tulip wood and maple. There are ivory diamonds in the butt and ebony ones in the grip. The strange black shaft is a snooker shaft of pure carbon fiber - absolutely zero deflection - very weird feel. Enjoy.

Beautiful cue! Actually, there is a guy in Tacoma. WA that has been building travel cues for years, but his name right now escapes me. He used to sell then from time to time on eBay. He also does LOTS of bar-stick conversions...if his name comes to me, I'll post it.

Bob,

Cool set up you have there. Did you design it?

Does the cue play and feel like a regular cue when assembled?

I think it's Tom Hofstedt - not 100% certain, but believe that's correct. I met him at the BCA trade show years ago, in KC. He's a caricaturist by trade and was working in the Olhausen booth. He had a three piece cue with him then. There are others who build them also. I believe Sheldon LeBow did one for a friend of mine. The unique features of the Kilby are the longer shafts and the fact that they are all wood - even the joints. Thanks for looking.

Chris,

Thanks for your comments. Yes, I did the artistic design, Ron did the physical design of the three piece cue. He actually built two prototypes before he executed my cue. He sent me the first one and let me play with it for a while. I returned it with my comments and suggestions and, unbelieveably, he built a second prototype and shipped that one to me also. He got it all right on that one and my cue was built from those dimensions. He now offers them on his website. And yes, it plays just like my regular two-piece Kilby (an ebony piece with twelve butterfly splices, each with three underlays - posted here about a year and a half ago - search "Kilby"). Because of the shortness of the shaft, and the diameter needed at the joint to accommodate the wooden pin, the taper makes it extremely stiff. My regular Kilby has pie-laminated shafts, the travel cue does not, but plays just as stiff, if not more so.
