Sorry for the long post. This has been bugging me for a while, and I wanted to give all the info you may need.
I had a new GCIV installed at my home, by the authorized Brunswick installer, about 3 years ago.
He didn't notice that the cross-beams and the frame had set-up numbers embossed in them, to make matching up the frame idiot proof. He had one backwards - I had to point that out.
He used a plastic 4' Home Depot-quality level.
I asked him how he liked the GCIV's 22 slate leveling screw adjusters. He had no idea what I was talking about. I had to show him.
Unfortunately, I had to leave while he finished.
I called him to ask about settling, etc. He mentioned that he only had to use a couple of the leveling screws, right in the middle.
I thought, "WTF". Sure enough, a few leveling screws in the middle of the table were tight, the ones along the rails were loose.
As I checked the table over the next week, I noticed it seemed "bowed" longwise. When lagging for break in the center of the table, the ball rolled straight. The same lag-for-break shot near each side rail would curve towards that rail.
Meanwhile, the dealer I bought the table from closed, and I didn't want this installer in my house again anyway. There are NO Brunswick dealers (or table mechs that I could find) anywhere near me on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
So, (and this may be the stupid part), I went under the table and slowly, gradually, REALLY tightened the leveling screws with a BIG screwdriver all along each long rail, forcing the slate along the sides up against the rails. Then tested the roll. Then retightened, etc. It seems to be flat and true now.
Meanwhile, the cloth itself is not tight (and the weave in one area is a bit wiggly). When I lean into some shots, the cloth slides, ripples, and bunches up under my hand.
So, I want to at least get the cloth retightened, or replaced. My concern is when the new mech removes the rails, will my forceful slate level screwing then put upward stress on the slates along the long rail? Should the mech just loosen ALL the leveling screws, and start over?
Can anyone recommend a good table mech on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, near 21840?
I am in no great hurry. I'm just a home player with a home table, so I can fit whatever schedule is needed, for any traveling mechs. I hope I don't need a mech of "RealKingCobra"-quality to fix this
, But nobody named "Eddie" from the Eastern Shore of Md is allowed in my house again.:frown:
Also, do you think I hurt my table by the forcefull rail area tightening? Or did I save my slates from becoming permanently crowned?
Thanks,
Jim
