Best pool-shooting advice you've ever gotten from this site

The best advice I've ever gotten from this site was to contact Steve Jennings for a lesson. Outside of that I've gotten great advice reading David Sapolis' posts about 14.1. Another thanks to Steve and David.

I would have to say Blackjack's tips on 14.1 as well. A lot of the diagrams he's posted on the 14.1 page have helped me out. Also all the video's posted by Dennis Walsh.

Thanks Brian, but that thread didnt have any links to the video.

Was the video just of Lee playing? Or did it get into explaining the "V".

woody,

sorry my bad. this is the right thread:

lee and some douchebag got into it and lee ended up getting a temporary vacation before he could explain it too much but if you check out the link posted by timeseal (post #3) you'll get it. it may not seem like much, but it really helped me.

I learn the most from Jude Rosenstock's how would you shoot this posts than anything. The different opinions on how to play the shot always teach me something.

Bill Maropulos 14.1 videos on AZ and Blackjack's analysis (along with his many tips).

I think any tip that elevates your game is a good tip; everybody is at a different point.

Ah, I did read that thread, but it had been a while back and I had forgotten about it. Thanks for bringing it back up for me.

the "v" grip on the back hand. helped my game immediately. thanks to lee brett and the other poster who kindly posted a video link.

Several years ago on the Billiards Digest forum Dick Leonard, I believe, described this type of grip where you essentially "straighten" your thumb and forefinger and leave them completely off the cue.

Is this the same thing? If so, I know that it helped me at the time from "twisting" my wrist.

dkrager:
look at the exact spot that you are going to hit when getting down on the object ball.
randyg:
Unless all your shots are straight in it would be impossible to hit where you are aiming.

Why? Keeping your eye on the OB contact point doesn't mean aim the center of the CB at it.

I noticed you are new here. Maybe you have been lurking, maybe not. While your quote is good info, if that is the best you have read, you really need to take the time and go back over the last two or three years on here. There is a LOT of great info, both physical and mental and strategic. you can usually tell by the title of the post if it will contain some info.

For me, there have been way too many tips to be able to single just one out.

Hi Niel,

I've been aware of AZB for some time but I haven't been actively reading the threads the last year or two as I slowed down and pretty much all together stopped playing. But I have the bug again and I think the break has actually helped me in that I have more patience and discipline when I'm at the table. I'm sure I've missed some great tips and advice on the AZB forums the last few years...

I placed high value on that tid-bit by Greyghost because it pertains to proper mechanics which is where all my energy is focused on right now. I've always struggled with proper mechanics and I'm trying to slowly correct many of the bad habits I picked up early on. There is a long laundry list of things I have to remind myself of to do and not to do when I get down on the ball.

So whatever gets me shooting straight when I'm down on the ball is going to win big brownie points with me. All the knowledge and advice in the world isn't going to help you if you don't have proper mechanics and aren't shooting straight.

I hope that doesn't sound arrogant or ignorant...

I'll keep sifting through some of the older threads and see what else I can find to help me improve my game.

3. Tips from JAL and Patrick Johnson that help refine my aiming technique.

Then not too long ago there was a thread posted by genomachino concerning the dominant eye and it's relationship to pool. In it there was a tip on how to break the rack by aiming the tip of your cue 1/4" to the left of the cueball (for right-eye dominant people) and simply going through your usual breaking routine. Well, since this thread came out I have been breaking (and pocketing) the balls so much better it got me to wondering: What is the best tip/advice about pool-shooting that you have ever gotten off of this forum???

Maniac

I tried that and it really F-ed me up. I did give it a chance on two different days. Broke a total of aobut 15-20 racks and had issues pocketing a ball and flew the table several times with the CB.. Which is one thing I hardly ever do.

I guess I was aiming right to start with..

PJ: That's what I asked. What kind of adjustment is made?

By the way, if you are still "aiming" with your cue ball that's a tough way to aim. Hal Houle showed me something about Fractional Aiming that's the nuts....

Have a great Thanksgiving...SPF=randyg
