Old Cortland Wraps

I have a couple of 40 year old plus cues with original Cortland wrap. The wrap is tight, looks pretty good except for the wrap is showing signs of light roughness near the rear of the wrap, not exactly fraying just a little wear from use. Is there anything I can treat the wrap with such as a wax or paraffin product to protect?

Something to keep in mind - the way cuemakers press and polish
linen wraps today is very different from the wrap on your cues.

If you are not familiar with just how smooth and slick they are,
you might want to handle some examples. Especially if you want to retain
the feel of your cues as they now are - be sure the person doing the work
understands this requirement.

Is it possible to clean without pressing to retain the feel of Cortland?

Cleaning the wrap will cause the material to become fussy, it will need to be pressed, sealed, and polished. I do not know of any way to clean the wrap without doing the above.
 
Some nice Palmers!!! Here is a link to the "palmer collector" where he discusses how he cleaned some wraps. If that is not something you want to try, you can go to proficientbilliards.com and Scott could help.

The top cue looks like a #9 from the first catalog, the middle is a #14 from the third catalog..........and the bottom looks liek an L with a custom butt??

Mike, great addition to this thread, and I certainly agree Chris is the man when it comes to Palmers. While Chris does have experience working with cues, trust me when it comes to Cortland Line company Linen it takes a professional to correctly clean and press it like another poster said.

I have talked with Chris on different occasions. I had thought about Scott at Proficient. I was just wanting to get some input on this matter.

By the way the middle cue is actually a #5 from the first catalog also that was personalised. They are getting harder to find all the time.

I had a #9 that was my player that 'Grandpa' Jerry Barnett out of Kansas city refinish for me. (it turned out beautifully). Somebody else thought so too. It was stolen a couple of years ago. (I Hate it when that happens!)

I really appreciate all the input.
 
In your second pic of what would be the 'A' jnt of the Titlist, the first 2 threads of the wrap appear to be loose. If this is the case, it may not be salvageable. The overall condition of the wrap causes me to have my doubts.
If any threads are loose it's an indication that the adhesive qualities of the glue are about to expire and any efforts made to clean the wrap will not likely end well.
Take the cue to a Pro CM and let him make a determination.
A pic can tell you only so much.

They do move, a couple at the butt end of the last cue are slightly loose as well. But they still look pretty good for originals that have been used alot.
