I got reading a post in another thread and have to ask.
Why do you give positive rep?
When you receive positive rep then what?
Do you spread around just to give rep?
Your reason for giving neg rep?
Do you auto return neg rep?
I have been only giving positive rep when I like or find post funny. I haven't been auto returning positive or neg rep. I don't spread around cause I can't rep someone, I wait.
Is this going against rep etiquette here?
Here's my opinion......
Virtual rep is completely and utterly meaningless.. it has absolutely no function whatsoever. It's a waste of everyone's time and has caused many a divide between people, arguing about it's reason for even being incorporated into the Vbulletin code. It was designed for reasons that, in it's current state here, have no bearing on this forum.
Here is a method that is much more effective at "rating" someone, then getting all caught up in this rep fantasy world.
If you agree with someone's post or want to say something positive to someone, say it right out in public, for the whole forum to be able to see.
If you don't agree with someone's opinion, say it right out here in public, for all to see and give your reason why.
This way, the ones that tend to post reasonable, worthy, enlightning posts, will invariably be thought of, as a respected contributor based on the people that respond positively most of the time.
The ones that do not contribute, but use these forums as a playground for inciting flame wars, bashing people they don't like and conning or stealing from others, will be exposed for who they are.
The only function I see the rep "feature" is good for, is to send someone a quick message, (behind the scenes) and not tie up their PM quota's, as they scroll off rather quickly.
In the context "rep" is being used here, in this forum, by a wide group of people......
is like the guy bragging about
* how big a d*ck he has
* how many cars he has, or other material possessions
* how he gets all the women and they all walk away "as extremely satisified customers"
* how much money he has
* how he seemed to do everything you did, but did it more and did it better
* how he always seem to win at anything he does, if he lost, there was a valid reason why
* and lastly, how him associating with you, is him doing you a favor, it will raise your status, in how the world views you
If you are the type of person that is inclined to brag about something, brag about how well you play pool, how many racks you've ran, how many good players you've beat, how well you do under pressure, how you were key in helping Al Gore invent the Internet.....
So now I am at the end of giving
my opinion.... Knowing that I will offend some people, because of their strong feelings on the "rep system", and also knowing that others may agree with me. The ones that may benefit the most, are the ones that weigh many people's opinions and then form their own. If I could shed some light, to help them make a informed decision, whichever way they lean, then my time to write this, was not a waste.
There ya go!!! That's MY opinion (one out of 20,173 members here)....... AND I also have a A$$hole too!!!:smile:
