What Second hand smoke symtoms do you experience?

Ain't it a shame.

I think most people have those symptoms if they are not used to being around smoking. I personally can't believe that the laws allow smoking indoors. When I move I am going to get a diamond table in my house and nobody will ever see me in a poolhall again except for a tournament, or at q masters at the us open. What a joke smoking indoors is!!

I went to a tournament in Oshkosh this last weekend. At the end the quality of pool was down considerably. It almost turns it into an endurance contest. Or who can handle the smoke better.

Have a great day Geno...........

Your so right............

If people want to harm themself with smoking, the government allows them. As a non smoker, they shouldn't have that right around me. You would think my 'want' to be healthy would trump the smokers addiction of a slow death.

I guess my choice doesn't have the tax revenue though.

Good point...........

I gave it up 31 years ago in February. I wanted to smoke for seven years, no joke!! That's the kind of hold it had. It didn't bother me much in the pool room in NY but in SC it's another story. Less ventilation in most places. More people who don't care whether their smoke effects someone else or not. The smell on my clothes in apparent to my wife soon as I walk in. She's allergic to it. Of course, it effects my eyes, throat, etc. after a while in a place. Sorry to say, it's one of many reasons I rarely play outside my home any more.

I like when people act proud that they can smoke wherever they want and they are proud to be smokers. Lets see how proud they are in 30 years. Cigarettes have gotten so much worse now though it might not even take that long.

And i have had several people in my family sick and/or dead from lung cancer as a direct result of smoking, so i dont want to hear how offended you are.

I used to wear contacts...........

It does a number on my contact lenses for one. In one month the smoking ban will take effect and I will be very very happy.

This is of course nothing against smokers. If you smoke then have at it. I actually don't mind so much when the place has a good ventilation system, but the place I go to has none at all and there are usually a dozen or so chain smokers in there when I am there.

That was the worst. When I wore contacts it was so bad with the smoke.

I've been in many places where the ventilation is really good. But it's like if someone inhales drugs in the form of smoke about 80% get into your system right away. The difference between inhaling drugs or injecting is almost the same effect.

With good ventilation it's kind of like saying that's much better. I'm only breathing in about 1/2 of the poison. It doesn't matter. The results are still the same.

Thanks for the comments.............

Secondhand Smoke is Awful!!

I play APA and for (3) weeks out of (15) I stay at home. Why? Because my team is scheduled to play at smoking venues (Private Clubs).

The last time I played at one of these smoking venues I coughed for a month, had to use an inhaler and went through two Rx of antibiotics to get the congestion out of my lungs. My Doctor told me the secondhand smoke is accumulative. At some point you will pay for breathing it. So at this point I avoid secondhand smoke like the plague.

Here's a FUNNY JOKE for EVERYONE!!

I remember a joke back in the 80's. Steve was trying to explain the effects of second-hand smoke on his person...His hair smelling and his clothes, etc.
He stated to Tom, that smoked, "I don't care if you smoke, just don't force me to deal with your smoking residue! I don't drink beer and force you to deal with it's residue". Tom replied, "How's that? There's no residue from drinking beer." Steve explained, "Well there sure is residue. I just don't choose to stand on a chair and pee on your head. I go to the bathroom and put the residue where it belongs."

I never laughed so hard....LOL :rotflmao1::rotflmao1:

That's how I feel........................

I'm allergic to it and I get brutal hangover-like symptoms the next day. Bad headache, dehydration, etc. Thankfully its illegal to smoke indoors in Canada (in public places).

I have a headache still today. It's monday. I finally could sleep good. Feel better today but not great.

I really feel bad for the owners and workers in these places. I had a bar/ poolroom for 12 years. We just buried another one of the people that worked for me. She smoked also. Cancer. Her brother Denny, a good friend was buried about 2 months ago,he smoked also. He was a regular at my place.

A friend of mine and myself were talking about all the people we knew that were not alive anymore. All these people had one thing in common. They had been in the smoke for so many years.

What a tragedy that the no smoking bans are just going into effect now.

Thanks for your reply............

Good point......

This is what I always here. If we don't allow smoking we will lose business. I believe all states should make it illegal to smoke in public places. Then we would have to listen to how the government is descriminating against smokers. So I feel if a state allows smoking in public places, the smokers should have to pay for health insurance for all non smokers. Just my thoughts tho.

A friend of mine. He's a lawyer in Olathe kansas. About 2 years ago he told me he had lung cancer. He doesn't even smoke. He was doing chemo and was talking about the loss of energy he had.

Unreal. He was explaining to me that now he only goes in the poolhall during the day. What a tragedy.

There is a smoking ban there but the place found away to get around it for awhile feeling it would hurt their business without the smoking.

I think you right. it should have just been made a federal law for all states especially when it has been so proven that it is killing people and making them sick......

Thanks for the input...........

Your so right

Not a bad idea, but id pass on having my health insurance paid for. You couldnt pay me 10 million dollars to have lung cancer.

Maybe the reason so many people and players are getting sicker from the smoke than they did before is they might be real close to getting cancer or some other lung related disease.

15 years ago I never got so sick from it............

Great input

Well I'm sure I'm in the minority here...BUT

even as a "former smoker" I feel like a PRIVATE business should be able to run their business ANY WAY THEY WANT! (and this is not just about smoking) If they want peanut shells on the floor and stale smoke in the air, then guess what? IT'S THEIR BUSINESS! If the customer doesn't like it they have A PERSONAL CHOICE TO MAKE. Go or don't go . Why should any government, municipality, or city council be able to tell a private business owner how he/she should or can run their business? I've never understood the willingness of people to give up their right to CHOOSE! And like another poster mentioned... if enough people stop spending their money in a business, the OWNER should be able to make that call if he want's to stay in business. Not some bureaucrat that never goes there anyway. What's next? beer's must be sold for $2.25 Pool time cannot exceed $7.50 an hour? I know I'm being sarcastic but jeeez. If you don't like it, open up YOUR OWN PLACE and make it non-smoking. Why should the will and opinion of the NON-SMOKERS trump that of the SMOKERS?

And just for the record.. I HATE THE SMELL OF SMOKE! but If I owned a business I would want to be able to run it like I want to. Successful or not, it the owners RIGHT....

now I need to wash the soap out of my eyes.

I'm a non-smoker. After a couple hours in a smokey hall, my eyes burn and my vision is affected. I smell like crap and the only thing I can do next is shower and either do laundry or air out my clothes. Laundry and showers, laundry and showers.

Following a session of 2nd hand smoke pool, that night's sleep I get congested. Alien critters appear all up in there. I have to clear my throat all the next morning.

What pisses me off the most are the friggin chain smokers and lack of courtesy. Some leave their burning butts in the ash trays. Some blow smoke straight out over the table. IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK THAT ALL SMOKERS BLOW THEIR CONTAGIOUS DISEASE UPWARDS OR AWAY FROM PEOPLE AND CUT BACK JUST A HAIR?

I used to smoke. Been over 2 years without a drag.

Next month NC goes smoke free in public establishments, or supposedly anyway! I hate it for the biz owners, but if everyone plays by the same rules, hopefully they won't lose too much biz. I suspect it will significantly hurt them tho.

Yep NC goes smoke free everywhere, but non-profits, country clubs and cigar/hookah bars. I don't think it will effect business one bit considering the smokers will have to travel to another state and they only represent about 20% of potential customers.

I personally can't wait to see what happens at the beginning of the year.

GOOD for you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking as an ex-smoker, I can see both sides of the fence.

I never realized how offensive smoking was until I quit and began to smell the smoke from others. Oh, man, the hairs in my nose stand straight up. It actually makes me feel a little sick to my stomach. :help:

My boyfriend has given up a lot of bad habits as he has aged. When people hit the half-century mark, they sometimes do a little bit of soul searching and try to improve what years they have left on this earth. Obviously, some habits won't allow people to live a long life. :sorry:

A great pool player from Maryland, Michael "Geese" Gerace, passed away a few years ago at the age of 54 from cancer. He smoked a couple packs a day of Lucky Strikes, without the filter, for many years. Larry Lisciotti also passed away from cancer, and I do know Larry smoked cigarettes.

Of course, people do get cancer from not smoking, but if you smoke, you increase your chances of getting it.

I have BEGGED my boyfriend to quit smoking. He does smoke outside on the porch today and does not smoke in the house, but I can still smell it when he opens the porch door. I don't even want to go in the porch during the summer months because it stinks now. :barf:

I used to get a headache and swollen red eyes when in a pool room that allowed smoke, and this was when I was still smoking. Imagine that. It still made me sick then, and I continued to smoke. :embarrassed2:

I can remember a few years ago, writing on this very forum, b*tching about having to go outside in the FREEZING COLD in the winter to smoke cigarettes in non-smoking pool rooms. I complained that many smokers will not hang out in establishments where they cannot enjoy their smoking; thus, the reason why some businesses are closing their doors due to the smoking ban.

Well, fast forward to today, and you won't see me in any smoking pool room. Virginia, the tobacco State, will pass a law this month banning cigarette smoke. There is no smoking in Maryland establishments already, and D.C. jumped on board a year or two ago.

Nobody could force me to quit smoking when I was a smoker. Like any addict, I came up with every excuse why I wanted to smoke. I only wish I had quit sooner. :embarrassed2:

Come this February 16, 2010, at 1:30 p.m., it will be 2 years of me not smoking!
:clapping::clapping::clapping:

I quit 25 years ago. I thought it was cool back then having a cig hanging from my mouth when I played.

I was the most inconsiderable smoker in the world. If they would have had a smoking ban back then I would have been out of control.

So I understand both sides of the fence also.

This side is so much better and healthier for everyone.

You said it all. Thanks............

Ok, let me try and piss someone off, I don't think it would be hard withthis thread since only the non smokers are really on it.

I know that smoking is bad for you and that sometimes it is uncomfortable for others. I am also sorry for anyone here who has lost a family member of had serious illness as a result of second hand smoke. Having said that;

I speak to pool room owners all the time who are barely keeping the doors open since the smoking ban in their area. It hurts their busines. Obviously they were doing ok when the smokers were there and now they are not.

Also to my knowledge smoking is still leagal although barely so as another poster pointed out, don't go it it is hurting u that much. The smokers have stopped going into pool rooms to show how they feel and unfortunatly had hurt alot of good people.

I suggest that all you non smokers write to the president and get the whole thing banned. You think this country is having it hard right now with the exconomy???? just wait until there is no more billions and billians in tax $$ coming in. Phillip Morris payes billions in taxes from its profits, combined the workers at Phillip Morris pay many millions in taxes, the guy at the 7-11 pays taxes on his profit from selling the cigs, I pay taxes when I buy the cigs. I think you get my point, u make it illeagal and watch what happens. U think you are sick now??? u may not even have any hospitals anymore.

Lookj I am a smoker but I don't like people smoking around me when I eat. I get it, however it is legal. As someone said if a room owner things its hurting his biz then he should put his own ban on it, very few will do this because the smokers make everyone money. Sorry flame away. Actually not sorry my opinion and allowed to have it its legal.

Ain't that a shame............

i have bad sinuses anyways and after about 3-4 hours of being in a smokey poolroom, i really feel like i can't breath. when i get home, i am always blowing crap out of my nose for about 2 hours...sorry, i know that sounds gross.

Isn't that a shame that you have to endure that to go someplace and socialise trying to enjoy the game you love to play.

I had a friend of mine that smoked one time tell me if I don't like it I don't have to come.

After awhile I thought to myself, I'd have to quit playing anywhere because back then there was smoking in all places that had pool tables.

Not much of a choice. I feel bad for players that are in these smoking states that still have no choice if they want to play in leagues or tournaments.

How sad..............I feel the pain............

I drive 2 hours to play without smoke..............

I absolutely despise indoor smoking.. A few years ago, the voters of Ohio won the smoking ban for bars, restaurants etc..

Well that is a total joke. I play league pool one night per week and ALL of the bars still allow smoking and there does not seem to be anyone stopping them. They tried it for a month or two but business was so bad, they figured that paying the fines was cheaper. This sucks for players like myself.

I still play once a week, and I know that it's my choice but I love the game so much. Eventually, the smoke will keep me from playing league pool due to the side effects.
I get headaches EVERY time I play league pool, they kick in before I even leave the bar for the night. I rarely sleep well that night and always takes me the next day to recover. Like Nathan, I get a hangover effect and I rarely drink a beer, never to excess.

Glutton for punishment, see what this game drives me to do. I love the game so much I sacrifice the sickness to get out and play. If I ever find a league that is played in a non smoking establishment that is close by, I am in for sure. Second hand smoke SUCKS!

I like your atitude. Many players don't understand this but the same thing that everyone that has a poolroom are bar is fighting to keep is the same thing that keeps so many people from playing pool in leagues. It's kind of stiffled the game. More people than ever are more worried about trying to stay healthy. One night in a smokey poolhall would be enough to chase most of them away forever.

I drive 2 hours to go to Minnesota to play pool from where I live. It makes me tired but at least I'm not sick.

I made the mistake of going to Oshkosh this weekend. Only tournament i could find that was kind of close. I'm still sick.

Great reply. Thanks geno............

Wow. Good info Good job Canada.......

Second hand smoke is a killer, if it don't kill you get lung, and heart disease. IMHO NON SMOKERS HAVE RIGHT ALSO!!!

Here is AZ Smoke are $7.00/PACK. $.35/Coffin Nail. In Canada smokes go for $13.00-$15.00/Pack because the GOVERMENT KNOWS Smoker get sick more, so let the smoker pay for their Health Care up front.

That's a different way of looking at it. Pay forward for the misery.

Great reply. Thanks Cowboy............

It seems to be accumulated effect........

normally i'd tell someone to a hand you a napkin to wipe the sand out of your (left out because it's inappropriate) but i guess we're all different. i've been around second hand smoke since i was a baby and i've never been effected by it

As a smoker smokes or anyone breaths in smoke your body is absorbing chemicals. Some of these chemicals are very toxic and are very hard for your body to get rid of. Eventually this results in an overload of to much of what is not good for you.

The smoke never bothered me until I was about 45 . Then it got worse and worse where I can't hardly be in it at all.

People spend alot of money trying to detoxify their body. One of the worst things you can put in your body is cigerette smoke. There are just to many toxins that once their in your body it takes a long time to clean out.

Cancer and many other lung related diseases are natures way of telling us not to do it. The results are delayed but end of the story is about the same as walking directly into a fire.

When I smoked I would never thought I would be sayin this......

Good post thanks...........

I smoke but it wouldn't bother me one bit if they banned smoking in pool rooms here. I don't smoke in my house because I don't want it to stink of smoke. I'm at a point now where I'd really like to quit but I find it very difficult to. My wife had cervical cancer earlier this year and she had to quit smoking 2 weeks before her surgery. She hasn't started back, although she's always saying she wants a cigarette..........but I won't let her. Maybe I'll try to make it my new years resolution.................again.

In no way am I defending smoking, but the things you point out above are exactly what happens to you when you walk down a busy street with car exhaust fumes all around. Face it, just going outside is bad for you.

COCO, do you know that the Canadian dollar is different to ours?? it works out to be about the same price there as here. The whole they are 413-15 a pack to make up for sick smokers was a non starter bud. LOL, good try though
