Cue Lathe from Cowboy Billiards

Um, yeah, thanks.

The thing that annoys me the most is why nobody posted anything about this guy sooner. It seems that everybody knew his stuff was junk but there was no thread about it. I'm glad I could throw away $200 so everyone else doesn't have to. :grin-square:

You obviously didn;t take heed of Chris's post

I have nothing good or bad to say about the previous lathes mentioned, but I do think with all the experience I got putting tips on with only a wood lathe in the early years, that I could do decent tip work with the Cowboy Lathe. Sure it is primitive compared to a full blown cue lathe, but it cost a fraction of the price. It is hard for me to wrap my mind around anyone expecting something super accurate and super easy to use for what those cost. It is kind of like the people who call me hoping to buy enough equipment to build cues on a $500 budget. Some people really do have unrealistic expectations.

You obviously thought you could go on the cheap with little to no experience putting on tips but yet you expected a perfect job by buying the lowest cost item .
As Chris said, with the right amount of experience, Bob's items are quite usuable if you have the right experience

I've known and dealt with Bob for over 10 years now and have never known him to be shady or anything else. I've always been more than happy with anything I've bought from him cause I knew what I was getting.

You shouldn't be blaming the AZ community for "not warning you" as there was nothiing to warn you about. Did you ask anyone for their opinion on what they thought of Bob's product(s)

Quite your whining and get on with your life, you didn't throw away $200, just take some lessons and learn how to use it properly

Just my 2 cents

In Bob's advertisment for his lathes, and I qoute:

""This auction is for one

SharpShooter
PROFESSIONAL PORTABLE
POOL CUE LATHE

for use working on pool, snooker and billiard cues

This auction is for one of these outstanding tools

Worth its weight in gold if you like to work on your own pool cues.
Now you can
Master CUE and SHAFT
repairs and make money doing it without spending a small fortune.
Similar pool cue repair lathes sell for $799 or more.

These work excellent.
We developed this tool to be used for the novice or serious payer that needs to have a highly portable professional quality lathe for cue repair and maintence.

IT WAS SO EASY TO USE AND SETUP
This lathe sets up in seconds or can be kept fully assembled
Lightweight yet very professional

NEEDING A TOOL TO DO CUE TIP PLACEMENT AT TOURNAMENTS AND LEAGUE NIGHTS WITHOUT SPENDING A SMALL FORTUNE

WE DESIGNED THIS SIMPLE TO SET UP EASY TO USE ""

He advertises it as an easy to use and professional unit, easy enough for a novice to use. That statement LEADS one to believe that it will do a great job with LITTLE prior experience needed. It's one thing to learn on a wood lathe, I did also, knowing that it was less than the required equipment, but it was the best I had and could afford, my dad owned it. But Bob's statements are very misleading to a beginner, IMO. Here's the link, read it and then think about someone that hasn't done any tips etc. having the desire to try cue repair for various reasons, looking at this ad and believing it at face value. He is basically telling them it is the same as more expensive units, etc. To me that is false advertising and taking advantage of a novice. How many times a week someone joins here and asks what is a basic lathe to start with? And how many people have responded with COWBOY BILLIARDS LATHES?? I can't remember even once in the 2.5 yrs I've been here. Professionals don't use junk, but he advertises it as the same level as the 'expensive' lathes..and a Professional unit, how is that honest? Has any of the Pros on here actually used this lathe and can endorse it? I know that I bought his 'unsteady' rest, (and threw it out) what have the pros bought and use in their business?
JMO.
Read for your self, and then think about it from a beginner's standpoint.

Dave, I think you meant mis-lead. LOL.

So, it's finally over. Why? Because American Express is more than tired of trying to deal with him as well. I was not able to get all of my money back, but AMEX was willing to offer me a compromise.

Cuetips: I am not blaming the AZ community for my mistake. I was just really surprised that nobody posted about this guy previously. Especially since there seems to be an overwhelming number of people who share my opinion of him and his products. This was not my first interaction with him either. Bob is easy to get along with until you have a problem with something, and which point he will turn on you like the snake he is.

BUMP! American Cowboy Billiards sells JUNK and Bob Moss in as A$$H0LE!!!

I want to thank all of the cue makers for their support!

Two part question

So, in review...If you've got 200 bucks and want to replace your tip and clean your shaft yourself this thing will do the job? With the caveat, If you take the time to learn how, and don’t expect miracles?

Has anyone else used one of the so-called Cue Lathes that you can buy from 'American Cowboy Billiards' on eBay?

I bought one of these a few months ago, and unless I have unrealistic expectations, it's the biggest piece of junk I've ever seen or used.

Does anyone else have any experience with one of these?

I talked to the gentleman at the American Cowboy Billiards. I told him how you were discgracing his name here.

He was alot kinder and more of a gentleman , even after the fact that I mentioned what you were trying to do. He says you have not and will not mar his reputation
His story is you purchased a lathe from him , modified it, rewired it, then sent it back and filed a pay pal dispute and that you lost the dispute, because he said the lathe was a piece of junk after you respliced the wiring, added dimmer switches, toasted the motor etc.
He says he has pictures and would be glad to share them with anyone. He further went on to say that you threatened to ruin him by posting your slander here, under multiple user id's , because you were terribly upset because pay pal denied the dispute, after viewing the pictures of the returned lathe.I
I'm not being bias, nor do I know either of you, I'm just merely shedding some light on the other side of the story.

If he is telling the truth, and does have the pictures, and proof of your loss with pay pal, it'd make me wonder who would trust you in any dealings.

I can say this much about the shaft spinner , which is about all it is. My dad bought one of these about two years ago and it worked ok to clean or polish shafts but it was alittle hard to do tips and ferrules. He had to do everything by hand with files and blades with no tool attchments on this item, it was really more trouble then it was worth. I know that he was really glad when he spent the money for a real lathe. I remember him saying about haveing to tape up the shafts were he put the shafts in a rest to work on them the wheels were hard and would mar the shafts if you did not tape them up. Which then he was made cause the shafts would get all sticky from the tape and to clean the whole shaft you could only use the part that held the shaft and hold the other end with your hand while spinning to support the shaft to clean it. It someone wants to spend their money on this go ahead . But I seen the thing in action and there is alot better lathes out there you can use the $200 towards. Even look into the Taig set ups on here that my dad bought his off of. You can do everything with those. A az memeber on here sells them . I know my dad is satisfied,,,,

If you think he's such a stand up guy why don't you go and buy one of his so-called lathe's and post a full review of it here?

I DARE him to post here again and try to defend himself. I would also LOVE for him to post pictures of that piece of trash here for everyone to see. My biggest mistake was not taking pictures myself before sending it back to him.

I am not posting under any other user ID's, just this one, my real one. And yes, I told him that I was going to let the rest of the billiard community know what a piece of trash his lathe is. That's the wonderful thing about the Internet. If you get ripped off by someone you can let other people know about it.

I would advise against it, but go ahead. Don't say nobody warned you. Be sure to post a full review with pictures

I wasn't saying anything about anyone being a stand up guy or vise versa. I have no interest in buying what he has to offer, my equipment is top notch, however, i probably spent $50000 and stil spending, and no i don't make cues, Quit your crying over $200. Did you actually think you were going to become a full fledged cuemaker, spending only $200 for equipment? I'm sure his equipment does what he says it would, and no more.
No one walks into a business for $200 out of pocket and expects to be given the world.
You got what you paid for.
The old saying goes, you get what you pay for. If you decide to be cheap, you'd better'd be intelligent enough to be able know how to make it work for that price.

I'm not sure where you got the impression that I thought I was going to be able to build cues with that thing. I called it a 'cue lathe' because that is what he calls it. I just wanted to be able to do tips with it. For $200 it should be able to do at least that, right? Well, it can't.

I could have kept the thing and rebuilt it with better components. Yes, I am intelligent enough to do that. But the only thing worth keeping was the base piece of aluminum that everything else attached to. The rest was trash.

Unfortunately with that thing you don't even get what you pay for.

The funny thing is that any drill you might use with that will have more torque than the one that ships with the $200 version.

Let's take a look through his recent feedback... here's one from a guy who bought the 'drill lathe'

grolmund: "It works Fit/finish&fasteners are poor. De-burred/re-assembled on my own."
Bob: "TRIED TO SCAM ME OUT OF 2ND BASE & T NUTS SET SAYING 1ST WAS BAD"

That sounds about right, Bob will always point the finger at you, the customer.

Here's one for something completly different, a repair kit of some kind...

lqchld: "Sent USED junk set missing multiple pieces, buyers beware!!!!!"
Bob: "Purchased tip repair kit thats what we sent he stopped payment we reported him"
lqchld: "Seller sent old used kit in broken plastic tray, lies and says it was mistake."

I did a payment dispute as well and Bob reported me to eBay as non-payment. I got some rude e-mails but that was about it.

It's hard to ignore that he has a lot of positive feedback, but he also sells a lot of stuff that is made by real companies. It's kind of hard to screw that up. My problem is with his home made stuff that he tries to sell as 'real' equipment.

Jcurry, you have done everyone a great service by bringing the facts to light.

read the real feedbacks on this lathe and other products

Before you believe some disgrunteled customer that tried to rip us off after using our lathe for 6 months and trying to rewire it with a dimmer switch as a motor spped controller. DRRRR or another that is selling his own cue lathe on ebay read the real feedbacks about our lathe and a few of our other products. This is just a drop in the bucket. See for yourself. I attached a link below and just a few of the actual feedbacks.
