8 Ball do or die shot from tonight.

8 Ball do or die shot from tonight. Last game of the night, we were playing for twenty dollars a game and I was up $100. I'd gotten out of shape for the eight after running all my stripes and I wound up with a really tough bank. I had to make it or lose the game. I hit it with reverse (left) english and a medium stroke and it went in like it had eyes.

Reverse??

Why reverse?
EVERY GOOD BANKER I KNOW WOULD BANK THAT WITH RIGHT ENGLISH

It's not quite exactly the same as I saw it on the table in the WEI Cue Table diagram. I used reverse to shorten the rebound angle otherwise it would have gone long of the side pocket.

Hmmm...

Reverse english could be justified to avoid traffic.
Very sophisticated - remind me not to play you 3 cushion.

Great shot!

...except the explanation makes no sense.

A 90 degree cut like that with inside would check up on the rail, and should never have made it cross table unless you hit it 23423 miles per hour.

Under cutting it with right English was the proper way to shoot the shot, as you'd get a fuller hit and would reduce your chances of scratching.

Then again, you made it, so who cares? :p

it looks like you'd use right hand english to make that shot. was this on a barbox or a 9 footer? did he quit you after that game? what'd you win total

Nice Shot

I would have hit it just like you did, and hard into the rail to shorten the angle.
Bet you put a nice stroke on it also.

Good call Jason. This makes far more sense to me, as the bank is easier, the pocket is fairly big, and you stand a very good chance of tying up the pocket if you miss at speed.

I think the correct shot here is to carom the 8 off the 3 into the 5 into the corner, or carom off the back side of the 3. The latter probably being the better choice, since if you choose the carom off the 3 into the 5, the 3 will rebound back into the 8ball and 5ball.

I don't agree with either option. :(

The 8 won't go off the 3/5 double carom. Even if the 3 ball doesn't come back to hit the 8, the tangent lines aren't on...at all.

And the carom off the back of the 3 is far too risky. I'm not sure it will even go if struck perfectly...and anything less is a sell out.

I with Nathan on this one.. A double Carom that has to be hit perfect IF it's even possible. And the bank into the carom is far from easy assuming the table is laid out correctly. If the ball in the corner was closer to the side rail, I'd def go with that option but not as shown.

I'd definitely try to bank it back it the side as the original poster did but cannot see any reason to use left english for that particular shot. Right makes the shot so much easier to me but he was the one shooting it. We all have different strengths, and certainly feel more comfortable with certain shots.. BTW, nice one on the 8 ball. It was a good shot no matter how you hit it:)

How did you get the cueball to make that left hand turn just before it hit the 8-ball? Is that the left english?

That's the shot. That pockets plays HUGE if you hit this with soft speed, because of the 4-ball. There's also a chance of leaving the 4 in a very difficult position for your opponent if you miss, although you have to shoot this shot with no thought of missing.

I agree with most of the previous posters. Banking the 8 to the corner to either make it or tie up the pocket seems be the best percentage shot. I don't think I would have attempted the cross side bank.....a miss on that shot and it's game over.....JMO

Definitely 1st choice would be to use the 4 to make a big pocket with proper speed. I'd have used outside on the bank you did make (repeat you did make it) since the contact induced english is working to reverse your efforts anyway. My 2nd choice would have been off the back of the 3 if there was room.
I wanna take control of a pocket if I miss.

The best percentage is the back of the three. No banking, shooting straight, most like to make, or take the pocket while creating an issue on the side rail for your opponent. The best opportunity to avoid a sell out...imo
