pretty neat bat

i like the idea but, turning down a bat to cue dimensions would take a very long time.bats r usually ash and i dont think it will stay straight but as long as you are in no rush and understand that it may not work give it a try.

bat to cue

My impression is save the bat (and ALL the memories). Buy a cue and donate the bat to your kids when you get old and gray. Sit with them and exchange stories of the day you hit the game winning double that got caught in the fence and you stretched it into a triple. Or the drag bunt down the first baseline that rolled straight up the line and scored the guy from third. Louisville sluggers!!!!! Aw the good ole days and memories!!!

I agree with Tom. Under similar circumstances I cut down a bat I had for about 50 years. It was a gift and was "customized" from the factory with my name and date. In retrospect as a memento hanging on the wall in my game room it would be a great conversation starter. As the forearm and butt sleeve on a cue it is just another cue to everyone except me.

I agree that I would keep it as a bat if it were mine, but that's not what you asked. If it meets the needed dimentions to become a cue, ash is very stable and should stay nice and straight for you with no problems. They have used ash in snooker shafts for many years. However, ash is not a very attractive wood for a butt in IMO, and it doesn't get real smooth as a shaft like maple does. Your choice, but there are many more attractive choices for a cue blank.

I think the Bat is cool; if you HAD to convert a bat, I'd find another cracked one to donate...

Rick Howard made his and Johny Archer's first break/jump cues from baseball bats... He might be the best person to ask? He could probably give some insight into how well they aged; i.e. are they still straight after so many years.

oh yeah it's straight, almost as if its never been played and wood color is exceptional.
Az member deanoc and I are discussing its use as a display piece.

Bat

I turned a bat into a cue for a guy. It come out fine but kind of plain. It wasn't hard to do. I think the bat you have looks cooler than what it would as a cue, unless you did some inlays or something.

I think you took me out of context regarding straightness...

I menant talk to Rick Howard regarding his baseball bat cues to see if THEY are still straight. I'm sure your bat is straight, but the final cue is another matter... And, since it has been close to, if not more than, 20 years since Rick did those cues, that is a good gage for you.
