Shane is one of the three best players in America. Wu is one of the three best players in the world. JMHO naturally. Until you've seen Wu play, it is hard to analyze or handicap this match. I think the world of Shane, but Wu is the Zen Master of pool IMO. I've seen him in action and it was mind blowing.

Darren Appleton's victory over Wu in the finals of the 2008 WTB was one of the great gutsy victories of all time. He reached down deep to find the courage to hold off the charging Wu.

Yang and Hatch would be a very interesting match. Yang reminds me of Sigel in his prime - No Miss! And I think Yang probably gambles better then Mike too. Dennis has this high gear and intimidating style that could make for a great match. The trouble is getting Yang to come to America. I guess I need to take Dennis over there.

Hatch would have a full dance card over there. You could do island hopping between the Phillipines and Taiwan and never be out of action. Just make sure you bring video camera's, I would pay to watch those matches on a stream. Something like a month long TAR, just day in day out Hatch in action over there, a video version of Playing off the Rail, Hatch as Angionni and I guess you are the backer guy writing the book Jay.

no mention of Archer anywhere in the thread whom none of these other world beaters are running to for a big money match. I don't think it really matters how he's hitting them (great right now), but if the cash is up for grabs Johnny usually gets it no matter who he's playing. It's been that way for 20-25 years now. I believe the last money match he was offered was to go play Nevel and he took down the cheese pretty quickly.

There has been a lot of talk about SVB vs. Johnny which would be awesome to watch, but I'd have to take Johnny in that one too because he just shoots as good as he has to to win.

As of right now I am not sure I like Archer against the absolute best out there. ATM SVB is the only guy in the USA who he is likely an underdog against, since Deuel never plays. But Archer does not gamble much and the last time he won a major international tournament with a field that included all the asians and europeans was a decade ago. He has not even managed to get close to winning a WPC in the 2000's from what I can remember, he was pretty quiet in the IPT, his US Open victories were in the 90's, he does not manage to show up in the huge tournaments like the Japan Open with 100k+ prizes for first.

The only thing to go on with Archer is his big tournament results against the people we are chatting about, and they are non-existent. With Yang he has also not managed to do much in those major events, but he has soem big wins in long sets against Orcullo to prove he has the game to go with the best for the cash.

If Archer wants to be there I think Archer needs to give TAR a call and set something up. If Yang is looking for a match I can think of noone better to set him up against then Archer. We kinda know where SVB is in the grand scheme of things, lets see where Archer truly is. Because I honestly don't have a clue, he might win 100-60 against Yang in a 10-ball match, or he might lose by that amount, we really have little to go in with Archer. he might be a monster in a set like that or he might be out of his league at this point.

You hit the nail on the head. The question is who the guy is that joins Shane and Johnny in the top 3. It's not Oscar, I imagine it is between Rodney, Hatch, and Deuel.

And Corey only allows it to be a question because he does not take the game seriously enough to be the best, his natural talent is the highest of them all. Take Deuel's talent and give him SVB's determination and work ethic towards pool and Deuel would be a serious danger to anyone in a long match.

lol @ this entire post. Check the tourney finishes in the past 10 years listed on the AZB player profiles. He's cashed in like 50 tourneys with payouts greater than $5000 in that time frame which is amazing with the lack of big tourneys. Also, you don't know much about Archer's gambling resume' do you?

And if you want to talk about recent play, he just won the 2 big tourneys in Florida (Mizerak and Corey's tourney), Shot flawless in the Mosconi Cup, and won Turning Stone. I'd say he's playing better than anyone right now.

1. If you ask the Phillipinos who the best American pool player is you will here the majority if not all state only one name, Johnny Archer.

2. Johnny Archer sleeps like a log. Ya know why? Because there is NOBODY woofin' at his door.

3. The timeless adage: To be the man, you've got to beat the man.

4. The ONLY thing Chuck Norris is scared of is Johnny Archer playin' pool!

5. My "window" will be open IF ANYONE decides to go down to Atlanta and take their shot at Johnny for the dough in a heads up match.

looking back

I was looking in some old copies of inside pool and there coverage of the WTBC, Wu made it to the finals. Wu played SVB in the quarterfinals I think it was and kept him sitting for pretty much the whole set. I think he beat him like 9-3 or something like that. This goes along with what Jay said that when Wu is in his top gear a miss seems impossible and not many can hang with him.

Dude, you misunderstood. First of all what you do with TAR is great, just keep it up.

I never said that Shane had no shot, even if he's your friend...:wink: I just think that Yang and Orcullo are slightly better, that's all. And no, they don't necessarily have to beat either Shane or Wu, anything can happen.

As for Dennis being better money player than Yang, well, he had two shots at home in Manila and failed. 9ball and 10ball. I don't know about classic pool room environment, but what would happen if he had to play Yang in Taiwan on those tables with extremely small pockets that they use there?

Then you should back anyone out there including these two guys, and let Shane do his thing, which is win!! If you are mad at your money, bet against Shane!!

So, what about the post do you exactly disagree with? I said myself in the original post that Archer might be a monster and smoke a top player in a long set like that. So what the hell are you on about again?

Ya he cashed in 50 tournaments, and I made it pretty bloody clear I was talking about INTERNATIONAL events which include Yang, Wu, you know, those guys we are actually talking about Corvette? We are not exactly talking about Archer beating Larry Nevel and Robb Saez in a tournament, we are talking about guys he rarely EVER plays in tournaments against and in those few events he has not done it lately.

Anyhow, ya I know his gambling record, I have watched him walk over entire tournaments, in person, never in any real danger of losing a match. I have been playing pool since he beat Rempe to win his first major title. Maybe thats why I said

I totally agree with you. I think the result of the pool is a little bias since most of the members in this forum are from the States. As Jay mentioned above, if you have a chance to watch Wu in action, you will understand why everybody in Taiwan call him the "little genius". One of my friends in Taiwan had the privilege of watching Wu broke and ran out about 6 frames of 10 balls.
