Thanks to a couple of our local businessmen, (Joe Nielsen, owner of Nielsen Biliards & Rob Mathews, owner of AirMasters Heating and Cooling), myself and about 25 other invited guest were lucky enough to attend a private exhibition from Earl Strictland and John Schmidt last night.
The event was held at a beautiful private pool room owned by Mr. Mathews which features a 4.5’ by 9’ pro-cut Diamond pool table, a 5’ by 10’ Brunswick snooker table, and a 5’ by 10’ heated Soren Sogard 3-cusion billiard table.
After introductions, the event started with Earl making some multi-ball trick shots. Earl then shot and made several moving ball shots. Next, Earl shot and made some incredible force follow stroke shots that were real crowd pleasers.
After about 45 minutes of being entertained by Earl’s stories and incredible stroke, it was Johns turn. John started off by running a rack of nine ball and relaying to the crowd what he was thinking as he shot each shot. John gave some very helpful tips and it was interesting to hear why he played the particular pattern. John then showed some different break shots in straight pool and played one inning. John again explained his thought process as he ran about 80 balls (It was amazing that he could walk up cold and run 80 on a super tight diamond). I really enjoyed this portion; it’s nice to hear what a top pro is thinking as he shoots and why he plays particular shots.
Next, John played a race to three challenge match with Joe Nielsen, who is one of our better local players. Joe won the match 3 to 1, but I think I would have to take John for the money:grin:. Earl and John then played scotch doubles with some lucky crowd members.
At the end, they answered questions, took pictures and signed autographs for everyone that ask.
It was really a great show that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys pool.
Thank you to Earl and John and their sponsor CSI (CueSports International) for the great show. Also, I would like to give a special thank you to Rob Mathews and Joe Nielsen for bringing this great event to Spingfield, hopefully they will do it again next year.
