Update on the Des Moines pool scene

One Pocket Tournament Information for Saturday, February 27th @3PM

We’re running this thing just like the DCC One Pocket Tourney, I borrowed the rules from http://www.dcctickets.com/OnePocket/tabid/71/Default.aspx

Green Fees will be determined prior to the tournament pending ownership at Big Dogs. Also will announce any added money I am able to raise.

Tables: If you have no table preference you will be able to specify that at registration. Ideally we will play on all Diamonds. If we get more than 24, the volunteers to play on Gold Crowns will have that option if they are drawn together. No one will be forced to play on a GC.

Watching the hit: If you have someone pinned up in the stack or another questionable situation arise, please find someone to watch the hit. If no one watches the hit, the shooter is always right!

It’s a race to 3, please lag for break and not flip a coin. All rules will be enforced so please read them carefully, especially on intentional fouls and all balls in the kitchen.
Format:
 Race to 3
 Single Elimination ($15 buy in)
 Buy-In Option ($10 rebuy if you choose to exercise it)
 Standard One-Pocket Rules
 Alternate Breaks
One Pocket Rules

Format: Race to 3; single elimination; one buy-back option.

Lag for First Break: Winner of the lag decides who breaks first.

Breaking subsequent games: Players will alternate the break.

Legal Break: A legal break requires you to pocket a ball or drive at least one object ball or the cue ball to a cushion after contact. Failure to do so is a foul.

Cue Ball Fouls only. If you move more than a single ball it is a foul. Standard rule. Opponent has option to move ball back to original position or not.

Scratch or Foul: Any scratch or foul results in loss of a ball. If you have no balls to spot, you “owe” a ball. You must spot what you owe at the end of your next inning in which you have balls available to spot. If a scratch or foul is “slept” and subsequently remembered, the ball is spotted after each player has shot once.

Trapping or Wedging the Cue Ball: It is a foul if you deliberately trap or wedge the cue ball in the jaw of the pocket. In addition to the foul penalty, your opponent receives cue ball in hand behind the head string.

Deliberate Cue Ball Foul: If you wish to take a deliberate cue ball foul, you must use your cue tip to strike the cue ball. If you strike the cue ball with anything other than the cue tip, in addition to the foul penalty, your opponent receives cue ball in hand behind the head string.

Shooting into the Wrong Pocket: If a player shoots into the wrong pocket and continues to shoot because their opponent failed to notify them of the error, any additional balls pocketed in that inning do not count, whether pocketed for the shooter’s or the opponent. The first shot to the wrong pocket in a given inning is the shooter’s responsibility, and the opponent is entitled to any balls pocketed on that first stroke. However, any other pocketed balls in the wrong pocket in the same inning are to be spotted as illegally pocketed balls.

3-Foul Rule: If you commit 3 successive fouls in one game you lose the game. Your opponent must notify you that you are on 2 fouls immediately before your next inning.

Slow Play: Slow play will not be tolerated. Tournament officials will issue a warning if they feel you are delaying the progress of the match. A second warning will result in ball in hand anywhere on the table. A third warning is loss of game. A fourth occurrence is loss of match.

All Balls are Behind the Head String with Cue Ball in Hand: Should this occur, the ball closest to the head string is spotted. If 2 or more balls are the same distance from the head string, the shooter will designate which ball to spot.

The "One Foot On The Floor" Rule Is In Effect

Can i bring a coach?

Yes~ 13 years ago when I started playing I actually just had Claudia~ remember she had colic and I informed Mr. Athens that he would not be leaving me home alone any longer while he went to tournaments. The ultimatum was to buy me a cue and put a table in the basement, thus began my love for the game. A week later I came to my first tournament at Super Toad where I met you and you were cheering sooo freaking loud when I made my first ball the NINE....!!! I will never forget the look on Scott Frost's and Bill Wolf's faces~ PRICELESS. However, Mike knew I was bitten by the competition bug and ever since then we've always played at the weekly 9-ball tournament regardless of where it was or who was running it. I think Mike and Jody kinda got voted to take over when Joe Chladek decided to retire... wow that was a really long time ago too!! Remember his bag of hats?? Since then the tournament has been moved a few times and changes had been made but in my opinion Jody and Mike were always just trying to keep the tournament alive and going in an honest effort to promote the game. I'm not trying to stir up trouble or make myself vulnerable to inadequate grammatical references, just want to put a positive spin on an event that has been really great for a lot of local men and women for a long time running.

Did Harlan tournament die out or what?

I agree jen

Ya all know I don't play one pocket but i will in the tourney. It's about fun, competition, commaraderie, support, and so on. All these posts are great. From Facilitater Frost, to advocating more 9's. This is the way it should be. Fun! There's a ton of people in DSM who love pool. To not support any of these ideas would be a travesty. giddy up.

So well worded. I'm going to talk to Randy this weekend and I'm gonna ask for the world. Obviously he's going to need to say no but hopefully we get a good compromise we all can live with. I also will give my standard, pre-tourney pep talk similar to what Lombardi would have done.

Big table tourneys will be in effect. If we want more 9 footers I think we need to prove it.

Jenni, Harlan is the weekend of March 6th.

Mel~ that means we are going to get ANOTHER blizzard... Last I heard there were only 12-15 gals that went last year...true? I have had some really great memories over there years past (smoked my first cig, got a hickey from Kelly H, worm and I cooked some breakfast in the actual Hy-Vee kitchen, and I think the three of us did enough shots that they ran out of booze. Gotta love the local farmers who jacked up that calcutta to over 3k as well. I've probably said too much already...:grin-square:

A Saturday tournament at Stix west would be great, I like the format too. Don't know how much I will be able to participate because once the temps warm up consistently I generally am showing homes... but it's worth at shot.

Way to go and I love your positive attitude!

I do feel the need to get out of town so I'm going to go on down to Olathe for the 9-Ball tourney this weekend.

I will be in the booth doing some commentating and also embarrassing myself in the tournament. Should be a good fun weekend. I'll try to get someone from Des Moines on the stream if possible.

Go to http://www.pool4u.com/ to enjoy the stream, I know lots of people are out of town this weekend but if you get a chance to check any of it out, I'd recommend doing so. One pocket resumes at about 11AM and the 9-Ball will start tonight after the Calcutta at about 8PM.

Mikey,

Kudos on a really cool thread.

Hey, I might be in Olathe this weekend. If I have time, I might try to swimg by Sun.

First couple are on me.

Damn right! That would be awesome, I'm easy to find too! Definitely always down to have a few and sweat some action.

road to mn

Headed to BCA regionals in MN. Gotts love snow. I myself dont think we r sliding near as much as we should be to keep the ride interesting. Kinda like a plane... i always giggle when i feel the drop. Thankfully Deb is back here with me so we can droid out. Good luck to everyone this weekend in the big O.

Let's just say Jesse Bowman is a real good guy to take first in the calcutta.

It was nice for people to see Jesse bring his A game in this tournament. I can't remember him ever getting to the final four of a Midwest 9-Ball tournament and not snapping the thing off. He is a monster!!

Great tournament and it was nice chatting with you Mike. Glad to see you made it home safely.

Don the roads were so bad I feel blessed to have made it home. In retrospect I won't attempt to drive on roads like that again.

Ok, the MN tournament was run very well. Justin snapped off the 9ball. Geoff got 3rd and Jon got 5th/6th in the AA division 8ball. Bruce and i didn't cash, infact i didn't even beat anyone :(

We cruised through the teams (only 12) with one match going to the hill (me) and i pulled out a safety game. We were down 11 to 7 (going to 13) at one point and ended up winning still which is awesome to do as a team i think. So we win that which paid $1300, not bad considering.

Sadly i decided to play poker there. Now down here in Dsm we play 90% NL. Up there they play 100% Limit. Yea, well i suck at limit and ended the weekend $300 loser after a couple of $6-12 sessions.

This is funny i think.......the bar in the casino gave out free soda right....and everyone cept our team was running around buying it all weekend while we were being cheap ass's and getting it for free.....LOL.

Funny Quote from the weekend about what he likes most about TEAM PLAY ...... Jon Brown "Getting a chance to beat ALL the players on the other team" -- haha

Very Very nice. DSM guys made some money this weekend and everyone in a different spot haha!

Gotta Love Olathe….

The trip started based on a sweat bet and a little bit of barking. I was watching the stream Thursday night, I had the bug to go, so I bet on Joey Gray over Gabe with Chris Jeffers aka the streamer. Well I wanted to collect my money so I had to drive to Olathe for it. I wake up the next morning and there’s no doubt about it, I’m going to leave around lunch. Reserved my room at the Hyatt and off me and Steph went.

I get their Friday and everyone(well almost everyone) is flooding the place. Played a couple sets on the bar table to see how I was feeling and won them both. Now I’m free rolling for the tourney and some of the hotel so I can see this weekend is going to be a good time. I get in the booth to do a few one pocket matches with Don Coats and it’s a lot of fun. He knows a lot of the history of the area and had some very good insight on the game.

Now after more than a couple cocktails and at least a midnight start time I get to play Sean Turner. They streamed it and he beat my butt so bad people in the chatroom bought me drinks via paypal! He played really well all weekend and finished 9-12th but he was in the winners starting Sunday, he knocked Jody to the losers side. I would have liked to have played better against him but pool is a funny game like that. I was at the table a lot of the time I just couldn’t close the deal. First match jitters, a late start, and him firing at me really had the heat on me. I’ll try to get him next time. It was time to go home from there.

Saturday my match started at 2:30 against someone with the last name Capone. Anyway I put in a very good effort and got through to the next round 9-3. I was feeling pretty pumped up so I go tell Evelyn I won and check the bracket boards. I’m staring at Mike Frost vs. Mike Banks Jr. in his hometown. I liked it or not. Banks wins the flip, breaks dry and scratches and I run out in no time. I’m not feeling nervous at all and I just kind of felt an upset in the air. Well on my first break, I break and run. So I’m up 2-0. Then Meatball decides to B&R on me. Next game he wins a safety battle, then B&R’s on me again so I am down 3-2 and breaking. Well I am about to break the balls and that calm I had going on just flew out the window. I was a damn nervous wreck from there. I couldn’t fade the name or the game. His safeties were strong and he keeps his rock on a string. I B&R one more time and go down 9-3. After the match was over Banks came over and talked to me a little about our match and it was cool.

So now out of the tournament with a drink in tow me and Kirk Glass decide to play $52.50 worth of table time on a big diamond. Suffice to say when it was over I was hammered. I met IBA5467 or whatever the hell the numbers are. Very funny guy. Definitely an Alabama boy with a strong accent. I didn’t see him play as I was socializing but damnit he buys drinks good. He disappeared like a shadow but we probably talked for 5 hours while I played. Now that it’s almost midnight and the mini tourney is about to start I figure why not, go back in the booth. For those of you who missed me in the booth Saturday night for the 10 ball mini tourney, I was on a roll. Damn funny stuff. I made it home, don’t know how but I made it home that night.

Sunday came quick. Lots of time on the stream with a lot of different folks. Some of the people who were in the booth with me were Chip “Best Hair in Pool” Compton, Jesse Bowman, Jamie Baracks, Sarah Rousey(lots of Sarah), Taylor Anderson, Don Coats, Jeremy Jones, Turbo Joe, Doug Patrick, Gary Lutman, and I’m probably forgetting a couple people. The Dave Matlock not wanting to be streamed fiasco is cause he wants money to be streamed. Right or wrongly Dave is royalty in Olathe but I guess the cameras hurt him. I think I got to talk with a lot of you guys online and I didn’t come up dry on many questions. I also asked a lot of the players tough questions or things I think are hard to find out. I had Baracks on there for a while and we talked about it all, it was good stuff if you were watching. Sarah told you about the womens tour. Chip Compton said if you want to win you have to run out cause everyone there is a “thug”. That was funny let me tell you.

I bought Jesse Bowman and Dustin Gunia in the 1st Calcutta. Bought Jeremy Jones in the 2nd Calcutta. Jesse won the tournament, Dustin got in the Calcutta 9-12th, and Jeremy Jones finished 4th. I lost a tiny bit of money on Jeremy but who cares I could have won more if he beat Jesse. I moved pretty good overall on the trip and after expenses I won over a thousand in total. Not bad for a solo trip with your woman as your road partner. Steph was a very good sport also all weekend, thanks to the Goose.

Oh the entire tournament pattern racked. Jamie Baracks talked about it some. He feels like you have to do it to be competitive in a tournament like that. He likes that the DCC is really strict on it and doesn’t allow it. Jesse Bowman thinks its bullshit and wishes people didn’t do it but lives with it. Pretty much all the good players there just feel like it’s a necessary evil of the game. Everyone agrees it’s illegal according to the rule books(fact) yet none of them really seem to like doing it. I talked to Jody while he was down there and he feels like when he goes to the tournament he’s practicing for Olathe. He has bigger pool goals than DSM that he wants to be competitive at, while I still disagree that makes sense to me. I can respect that. We didn’t kiss and make up but I did want to be clear with him on where I was coming from. Obviously he finished 13-16th which is good for that tournament. He didn’t run into any champs but did play 16 yr old Taylor Anderson when he got eliminated. That kid is raw and hes no rookie. He beat Jody 9-6 and turned around and had Shane McMinn trapped up but eventually lost.

For the folks of pool4u.com like Peggy Fusselman it was a pleasure to meet you. Chris Jeffers ,who ran the stream, it was good to meet you as well and I hope I helped out a little with the stream. You guys might be hearing my voice a lot more at the Midwest events if everything works out and y’all can afford me.

I’m sure I forgot some stuff or intentionally left it out, blame it on the alcohol.
