Dumb question maybe. But, I see all those pretty guages for mesauring the humidity in the air. Where do you guys find those? Whats the correct name?
 
Hygrometer. You can find inexpensive ones at Bed, Bath and Beyond, Target, ACE Hardware, etc.
 
No matter where you get one you should salt test it for accuracy. Never believe what it's reading. I've had some be as high as 15% off one way or the other.
 
Do a google for hygrometers and you'll get a crap load of info.
I believe it is Xikar that makes one that has an adjustable calibration knob.
All of them you'll have to test to find out where they sit.
 
Relative Humidity

I don't think it is necessary monitor the humidity in your shop if you have heat and air conditioning. You will never be able to completely control humidity so the best thing you can do is limit big swings in the wet bulb reading. I do believe in a moisture meter for checking your wood.

Relative humidity is a function of the relationship between air temperature and the wet bulb reading on any given day. The warmer the air the more moisture it can hold per unit volume. This is why air conditioning is the most vital control for limiting excess moisture in your environment. Air conditioning removes moisture from your shop because it dehumidifies the space.

If you keep your shop in a temperature range of 60 to 75 degrees by using heating and air con, then, I my opinion you will be treating your wood in a responsible way.

If you don't control the temp and have wild swings in the humidity, then you may have some problems.
