A different question about Penn state DC motor

I need some input from the lathe operators and machinist(cuemakers) about this dc motor http://www.pennstateind.com/store/TCLVSKIT.html. It would be very easily mounted to the bracket of my old 54 in. atlas metal lathe and has the right diameter shaft, I just need opinions as to how well DC power will turn this lathe through the speed change pulleys. If the 1/2 horsepower rating is true will DC replace the factory AC 1/2 horsepower because the variable speed would be great for slower speeds. Please feel free to tell me the truth in your opinion as I'm tired of hand starting every time I use the lathe, Harbior freight has a AC motor for around $60 but no variable speed. I have a Brianna 7foot taig based lathe and another Deluxe that I could use the Pennstate DC on at a later time but need it on the Atlas now.--Leonard

no

So will it pull the load or not, any guesses before I become the guinea pig. LOL--Leonard

I vote no. The headstock and chuck is much bigger and heavier than the smaller lathes. You need an AC motor with dual windings. Enco has an import motor that is reversable.
Good Luck

In all honesty it depends on the board in the variable box. Your best bet would be call the guys at surpluscenter.com and tell them what you are trying to do. I have used them in the past and they have never steered me wrong. You will probably pay more that $100 but why spend good money after bad when you can be sure and do it right the first time.

pennstate dc motor

I vote no also. I think the peenstate dc motor is great for cue lathe/wood lathe and maybe even drill press but starting a metal lathe would need lots of torque, I think it could overload the power supply at start-up. The peenstate has instant torque but amperage may be high enough to kick the circuit breaker.
I have one on my homemade cue lathe and it works great for me.
good luck

Thanks guys you made up my mind and I will go buy the 1/2 hp AC motor this weekend, I will just have to swap the belt when needed. At least I know my drum switch is in great working order so that ain't a problem.--Leonard
