A big thank you to everybody who participated in the Cue Equipment Poll.
The question was, rate your skill level, and whether you play with:
1. a stock production cue
2 . a modified production cue, for example, with an after market shaft or a modified taper.
3. a custom cue
The intention of the poll was to determine if players sought more customization as their games improved, presumably because they considered customized cues and to be better or better performing than stock production cues.
Here are the results of the poll.
Of 249 respondants, skill level ratings were:
4% were beginners
56% were intermediate
40% were advanced
16% of all respondants used production cues
22% used modified production cues (including aftermarket shafts)
62% used custom cues
Beginning players used cues that were categorized as:
40% production cue
30% modified production cue
30% custom cue
Intermediate players used cues that were categorized as:
13% production cue
24% modified production cue
63% custom cue
Advanced players used cues that were categorized as:
18% production cue
18% modified production cue
64% custom cue
Conclusions:
- A large percentage of AZ billiards members play with custom equipment or production cues with modified or aftermarket shafts.
- Only 18% of respondants used stock production cues. Even though the sampling was small, beginners were most likely to use a stock production cue.
- Intermedate and advanced players used similar levels of custom cues or modified cues.
- as a player's level of skill rises, there is a greater likelyhood they will use modified or custom equipment.
- the largest group of players on AZ considered themselves to be intermediate players, and they were also the largest market for custom and aftermarket equipment.
- at the intermediate and advanced level, AZ players chose a custom cues or modified cue at a ratio of 5 to 1 over stock production cues.

This does support the original premise that, as a player advances, they are more likely to use customized equipment, presumably because they want the equipment to be better suited to their game, or they consider customized equipment to be of better quality.
I was a little surprised that players who consider themselves in the "advanced" category used 18% stock, off-the-shelf production cues. That was more than I thought. However, considering that many of these might be high quality cues (like Schon for example) which many people consider to be production cues, it is certainly understandable.
There is one thing for sure. If you are a custom cue maker or an aftermarket shaft maker, AZ Billiards has the right audience!
