For $30 each I would buy both. Switch the shafts between the butts and find the combo that I like. Then sell the one that I didn't like for $60. :thumbup::shrug:

What he said. Voted B because I,ve tried a friend's that he picked up in Korea made like, hits good and looks very unique.

I'd definitely take B based on looks. The ash makes a much more distinctive looking cue than the maple. I don't see a reason to expect them to play any differently, so looks are about it.

I asked the seller what were the main differences between Ash and Maple woods, he said that the only difference was the level of stiffness.

If you're asking about the difference strictly between the Maple and Ash, I might have an answer. . .

At the SBE I was with a few gents watching the demonstration for the new Mezz break shaft. When I inquired more about it and why it was unique, I was told it was because it was made of Ash. . . which supposedly had a different hit.

The shaft did hit very well. . .


However, I turned to the guy next to me who happened to be a reputable cue maker (and often referred to as having a PhD in the various species of wood) and asked their opinion on the difference between using Ash and Maple for a break shaft.

He basically said that there was no significant difference. While Maple is a hardwood and Ash is "considered" to be a softwood, they share similar characteristics. . . with Maple being a harder wood. . .

What I really took away from the conversation was that it really boils down to availability of wood wherever the cue is produced.

Since these specific Mezz shafts are made outside of the U.S. in a location where Ash is a more prolific, indigenous wood, it is logical for the manufacturer to use it (not insinuating that all Mezz cues are foreign, because I have no idea). Where US Cue makers are more prone to use maple because of its availability, and historical use in the US.


Maybe this will help, maybe not. . . just my thoughts.

Maple is harder than Ash accoding to your friend.
For the jump cue, which wood (hard vs soft) is better in general?? OR, it is just the personal preference, no better or worse at all?
I clarify my question, I've never owned a jump cue, so if I use it for practicing more than playing (during the matches), which one (Ash vs Maple) is more suitable to me?
