European ALL AROUND Champion

The European Championships in 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball and 14-1 are now in progress, and will be finished Saturday, with 9-ball as the last dicipline. The others have already been finished.

EPBF don't have a trophy for the All Around winner, but I think they should consider it.

If there was such a contest, Jasmin Ouschan would be the winner of the women division, because she is still in the 9-ball and is already champion of the 8-ball, 10-ball and 14-1.

For the men, I have looked through the results, and I have given points for the finish in each dicipline. 50 points for 1st, 40 for 2nd, 30 for 3rd, 20 for 5th and 10 for 9th.

This gives us the following All Around ranking so far:

David Alcaide, Spain, 80 points

Artem Koshovyy, Ukraine, 70 points
Konstantin Stepanov, Russia, 70 points
Ralf Souquet, Germany, 60 points
Nick van den Berg, Netherlands, 60 points
Fransisco Sanchez, Spain, 50 points
Marcus Chamat, Sweden, 40 points
Martin Kempter, Austria, 40 points
Niels Feijen, Netherlands, 40 points
Vincent Faquet, France, 30 points
Radoslaw Babica, Poland, 20 points.
Jim Chawski, Sweden, 10 points.

There are quite a few others with 10, 20 and 30 points too, but they are not among the last 16 players of the 9-ball, so they can't score more points. Both Vincent Faquet, Jim Chawski and Radoslaw Babica are still in the 9-ball and can get more points, even though Babica and Chawski can't win the All Around but can get a decent finish, and Faquet can at best get a tie for the win.

The three players in bold, Alcaide, Sanchez and Feijen are out of the 9-ball and can not get more points. David Alcaide can still win the All Around, but is depending on Artem Koshovyy and Konstantin Stepanov to lose their next match, and Ralf Souquet, Nick van den Berg, Marcus Chamat and Martin Kempter to all lose before the semi-finals. If that happens, the worst thing to happen for Alcaide is that Vincent Faquet will win the 9-ball, because if he does they will both tie at 80 points with a 1st and 3rd each.

This is the draw of the 9-ball, single elimination.

Nick van den Berg vs Chinaslov Ruslan
Martin Kempter vs Craig Osborne
Mats Schjetne vs Mateusz Sniegocki
Artem Koshovyy vs Radoslaw Babica

Jim Chawski vs Marcus Chamat
Andreas Gerwen vs Aleksandros Kazagi
Konstantin Stepanov vs Vincent Faquet
Ralf Souquet vs Lukas Krenek

WHO DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE ALL AROUND CHAMPION?

I am hoping for Artem Koshovyy from Ukraine.

Roy,
Thanks for the very informative post!

Any word on why Ortmann, Engert and Foldes didn't play?

Also, do you know who won the 2009 German 14.1, 8 Ball & 9 Ball Championships? I've kept track of every winner since 1976 but no matter where I searched, I could find no info on the 2009 results.

Lastly, any word on when the 2010 German Championships will be held?

That's a lot of questions but if anyone in Europe would know, it would be you.

Many thanks my friend for any info.

terry, would have saved you a lot of time if you just asked me before you searched :) Took me 5 minutes :)

German 8-ball, Dominic Jentsch over Weigoni

German 9-ball, Nico Otterman over Jentsch

German 14-1, John Blacklaw over Jentsch

2009 was played in Nov, so probably same for 2010

All info from the forum on www.billard-aktuell.de. My german is bad so I might have misunderstood some of it, but doubt it :)

Guess Engert and Ortmann didn't perform well enough in German Championships

Ok, the semifinals are about to start, and this is the score so far. (Players in bold are out of the 9-ball and can't score more points)

Ralf Souquet is currently ranked # 6 but is the only of the top 6 on the All Around ranking who will play semi-finals in the 9-ball.

If Ralf loses the semi-final, he will score 30 points and be tied with Artem and Konstantin, all 90 points each.

Then Artem has a 2nd, 3rd and a 5th, Konstantin has two 5th and one 1st while Ralf will have one 1st, one 9th and one 3rd. I believe Artem has been the most consistent of the 3 then, with 2 semi-finals and one quarterfinal, but they will all be tied on score.

If Ralf wins his semi-final, he will either end up with 100 or 110 points total, and be guaranteed the All Around winner.

Artem Koshovyy, Ukraine, 90 points (2nd, 3rd, 5th)
Konstantin Stepanov, Russia, 90 points (1st, 5th, 5th)
David Alcaide, Spain, 80 points
Nick van den Berg, Netherlands, 70 points
Martin Kempter, Austria, 60 points
Ralf Souquet, Germany, 60 points (1st, 9th)

The semi-final draw:

Chinaslov Ruslan, Russia vs Mateusz Sniegocki, Poland

Aleksandros Kazagi, Greece vs Ralf Souquet, Germany

Have they been racking by hand with tapped tables for all these events?
yep. I thought you know that ;)

Roy, quite interesting idea though taken from DCC model. Thanks for your time and effort calculating the points. Stepanov was very close to be all around champ. Did he finish second after Ralf? I believe he will still be very happy to know that if he did.

Ralf wins the All Around, he gets either 100 or 110 points.

Konstantin and Artem finished tied for 2nd with 90 points each, David Alcaide next with 80 points.

Interesting is that all top 3 players failed to score points in one dicipline each.

Ralf didn't get top 16 in 14-1, Konstantin failed to qualify for top 16 in 10-ball and Artem failed to do so in 8-ball.

If I had calculated f.example 5 points for 17th, 4 points for 33rd etc it could perhaps be even more interesting, and most likely we would not have a tie for second, but Ralf would have won it anyway with a 10-20 points lead already.

Maybe next year ;)

Ralf Souquet ends it with a break and run on 8-8 versus Mateusz from Poland.

Congratulations, well done!!!

Final All Around ranking:

Champion: Ralf Souquet, Germany, 110 points (1st, 9th, 1st)

Runner-up: (Tied) Artem Koshovyy, Ukraine, 90 points (2nd, 3rd, 5th) & Konstantin Stepanov, Russia, 90 points (1st, 5th, 5th)

What a 9 ball final... 12 b&r out of 17 games! I feel for the Polish guy, he played almost perfect but that's 9 ball... Ralf's shot of the match was a great long jump on the 3 with the cueball caroming off the 9 and making it. It was a very tricky situation, I think if Ralf didn't make that miracle we would have a different European champion.

Hey... but someone wrote a page of history of pool: Jasmin Ouschan won all 4 gold medals (14.1, 10, 8 and 9 ball), whitewashing her teammate Gerda in the last finals. That's huge! :)

yep. I thought you know that ;)

I thought they were using tapped tables, but I couldn't find confirmation anywhere. I didn't know if this was like a regular Euro Tour event or not. I wanted to get the stream but was unable due to technical difficulties on my end.

Thanks.
