Smoking during a match???!!!!

Ok so I'm getting ready to play my league match last night and my opponent has this huge cigar and puffing away. So I'm thinking it's all good he'll just puff on it while I'm shooting :eek:. Well I guessed wrong this guy kept it in his mouth the whole time and while shooting too. I see ashes falling every where (big ashes too). So I asked him nicely if he wouldn't mind putting it down while he shoots, and nope he goes off on me about how the pool hall was not smoke free and there's no rule about not smoking there :mad:. I mean come on are you serious :angry:, what happen to proper table etiquette and respect of the game. Just wanted to share my experience and hear every ones thoughts and in fact if there are any actually rules in league play about smoking at the table :confused:, APA to be exact.

What a joker. Personally I dont mind the smoke, but come on ashes on the table. Thats a little ridiculous and I would say something to the staff about it. A lot of the tables I play on actually have signs on them saying "No smoking on/near the table" to avoid idiots like that.
 
Moe, was this at Fast Eddies?

I would have told him, that it is his right to smoke, but he should not allow his ashes to contact the table.

Even if its not specifically in the rules, there should be some clause about unsportsmanlike conduct. I am sure there might not be a rule about throwing a dead chicken at anyone....but would you be allowed to do it?

This guy is most definately a low class chump. I agree with the posters that said mention it to the owner of the establishment, that is probably the quickest way to wise this guy up. As far as the APA, or any league for that matter, I too share the opinion this is unsportsmanlike conduct, but I doubt the LO would do more than ask this fellow nicely to refrain.....which you have already done.......Dan
 
The guy is a complete standout boorish ignoramus. He would have had my blood boiling! Fer real yo.
 
You should have gone all Johnny Archer on him and spent time before every shot picking up ashes. Let him figure out what was causing the delay.

People like that are real Jerks. Cigar smoke stinks in the first place and I know it gives me a sick feeling to be around that type of smoke. I seen it affect other people that way too. If those ashes hit the table when he was playing me and I asked him to stop. If he came back with the wise answer he gave you. I would of went to the director of the league or the owner of the pool room, if the director wasn't there and If the owner did not do anything. I would of stopped playing the match right on the spot . I then would of reported him to the league director. I am sick of people taking advantage of good people. Report him to your league director.

I'm with you on that one, I figured asking him politely to not smoke during shots was the appropriate move at the time. The after effect is what I was not expecting. Now I agree with all of you that reporting him in one way or another was the right thing to do, but at time I was also trying to focus and keep him out of my head. And then after the match for some reason I felt like reporting him would make me feel like a snitch (you know?) but it would have been the thing to do. That's my bad there. I'll tell you this, next week if I see him doing the same thing I'm doing the right thing :wink::thumbup:

While I don't condone his behavior in any way, I actually would've made sure he put the damn thing down before shooting, I feel like I have to speak up for us cigar smoking players. Not all cigars stink, in fact I'm complemented on the smell of my cigars every time I light one up, but there are definitely those $2 dog rockets out there that will stink a place up. Just thought I'd mention it, we're not all smelly smoking asshats you know. :D
 
Smoken & Choken

Just a couple weeks ago I was playing league pool and the guy I am supposed to play says he is going out to smoke a cig right before our match. He is a pretty nice guy so I said OK, well he is gone for about 20 freaking minutes. During this time I start to get pissed cause he is taking so long, when he got back I told him I was going to get an ice cream at the DQ and I'd be back in 20 minutes. He gets all pissed off and we get on each other a bit and then I said what the hell lets play. He was so upset he couldn't see straight and it was a pretty quick match from there. I finished him off and went to DQ on my way home. I think he enjoyed his cigarette more than the match!!

Hi Moe,

It's me, Mathew Pugh. I was born in Okinawa in 1977. Hence, the user name.

I'm surprised the waitress didn't get on him for it. In my opinion, ashes on the table is the same as food or beverages on the table. Sure, there is no rule against smoking in the pool hall, just as there is no rule against eating or drinking, but no one is allowed to eat or drink on the tables.

You know good and well, the managers at Fast Eddies will suspend/ban a person from the pool hall in a heart beat.

I like the post about going all Johnny Archer on him, but I think this would only be effective during a televised match. I wouldn't give my opponent the satisfaction of watching me work up a sweat, brushing the table.

I think if this guy would have gotten under my skin...I would have told him...we can do this the easy way, or the hard way....keep the ashes off the table, or I'll make you pay..........hey, that almost sounds like a poem:confused:
I would have played intentional defense shots all night long. I have no problems playing a single game for 4 or more hours.

Actually, Rule 15.2.6 has the "no throwing a dead chicken at your opponent" clause in it. :wink:
 
I'm just glad I don't have to worry about it. I'd go batshìt. My parents like to tell the story of how when I was like 5 or 6 I plucked the cigarette out of a guest's mouth and said "that's bad!" [or something similar]. 20 years later I'm still doing it >_<
