Hey guys wanted to get your opinion on what is the best level/levels to use while leveling a 3 piece slate table. I have been using a 6 inch starrett level and a 4 ft carpenters level for years. They have worked for me but I think there is a better combination out there. I just use the 6 inch because i got a good deal on it.

I use (6) 98-12 starretts to level a table. I find it to be fast and efficient. I was thinking of adding 2 more and might go with the 98-8 which are cheaper.

12" is to long, 6" to short, but 8" fits right in the crack;):D:D IMO...it's also the right size for leveling slates:D

I have 2x18" , 4x12" and 4x6" Starrett's. Longer is good for quick and simple installs\rough leveling the frame and shorter for the dead flat slate instalsl. i think more 8" is the way to go ust haven't bought any yet.

And the winner is 8" Starrett level. I guess I will have them throw one in on my next cloth order.
On a different topic I will be going to Vegas for the BCA tourney so if any of you table mechanic will be out there between 5/14 - 5/18 let me know.

Thanks Everyone!!!!

machinist level

Starrett model 98 is the most common used levels when leveling pool tables I would say..there is a few other manufactures of machinist levels but are not easily available like the starrett..most other levels are made in japan,ireland,germany,Swiss...most are hard to find and pronounce..' south bend is a easy one'<I think its German.
-I like to buy american when possible "and in my budget", so I go with the starrett 98 machinist levels..
*There is a few guys around here that collect levels...
:
I use one-18 inch,two-12 inch,one-8 inch, two modified 5 inch, all starretts..I also use a 36 and a 32 inch carpenters level that has a machined flat wide top and bottom that helps to set the starrett on top of em when leveling certain tables and slates that have been waving since the 70's..

Starret tools

I have extra starret vials but I just moved and Im still digging through my pile. I have or had 2 replacement vials for 98-12.

I use 1 98-18, 2-98-12's, and two 60" starrett straightedges$$$, but I also see 98-8's in my future..

I'm unpacking/cleaning this week, I'll search for the vials

Starrett Parts Dept

I wasn't able to find the replacement vial in either of my starrett catalogs so I called their parts dept. this morning just to check the price so I'd know what their worth. Anyway, they have the replacement vials IN STOCK for $12.10 + $8.95 processing fee that includes S+H. The part number for the vial for the 98-12 is PT15024. Mike in the parts dept said their in stock ready to ship today!!!!Good Luck, Gordon

Just thought I'd post the info in case anyone else was needing a vial for a 98-12!!! Starrett phone #978-249-3551

starrett

I did contact starrett before I started the vial repair, starrett's price is a little higher than what a old friend found em for in price...the 18 and the 12 use the same vial..I listened in on a phone order he placed with a supplier, they said it was back ordered item...
-if anyone has a replacement vial let me know'

Thanks guys,
Robert Molina
