Balance Point Question

Hi, guys,

I need some advise on the balance point of my 19oz cue.

Right now, the balance point of my cue is 18.5 inch from the butt, which is little bit too heavy for me.

How can I move the balance point forward to 19.5 from the butt ?
How much weight do I need to reduce on the weight bolt ?
what's the ratio for weight bolt and balance point ?

Thanks.

You should probably post this in the Ask the Cuemaker forum--a cuemaker is going to give the best advice to this. There are going to be a number of variables to consider, such as how much the current weight bolt weighs and where in the butt it's located, and what type of joint you have. If you have a brass 3/8 x 10 pin and a synthetic joint collar, switching to a stainless sleeved 5/16 x 14 would add some weight forward. You could then cut down on your weight bolt to keep the overall weight the same. I lot of hassle, in my book. If it were me I'd just shop for a different cue that met my needs. Good luck.

I realize I'm different from alot of the players here. But I feel where a stick balances on your finger means nothing. What is important is the weight at the tip during the shot. Alot of factors determine this where you hold your cue WHEN SHOOTING, the type of shaft, ferrule, etc. you can get a close approximation by shooting a normal shot don't let go of your cue hold it as lightly as you can and rest the tip on a digital scale. its not exact but it is close to the weight imparted on the tip at impact.

A 21 ounce cue and a 17 ounce cue can have the same taper same balance point and if you hold them in the same place the 21 has a whole lot more weight at the tip than the other.

but the same two cues if you were to "choke up" the 21 while shooting and hold the 17 at the very rear of the cue the 17 will have more weight at the tip at impact.

The right question is what is the proper weight at the tip while shooting?
I prefer a little more weight on the tip myself which is what you'd traditionally call forward weighted. But it is very subjective each player is different

If it's the Schon cue you want to alter, you might want to read this thread for some specific advice and potential problems:

The cue that I have is Carolina Cue, does it have weight bolt that can be changed or assembly bolt ?

My advice is maybe take the bumper out then hit some balls. That will take a few tenths out of the back and the balance point forward so u can have an idea of what you can expect.

Balance point

1/8 of an oz. + or - on the weight bolt equals approx. 1/10 of and inch + or - in balance change. You can experiment by adding weight with tape and seeing how far the balance moves then adjusting the weight bolt by that amount if the bolt is big enough. The problem is if much weight is added or removed removed you may have a good balance but wrong weight to feel proper during the stroke.

Btw,,,5 quarters = approx 1oz.

If your cue has a delrin buttcap, like Schon's do, you can change the weight of the cue but you must still leave a weight bolt in place.
