2nd ball break

I have had some success experimenting with the 2nd ball break in 8-ball.

I am hitting in the center but low on the CB, raised my stance a bit, & incorporated a minor sway to simulate the hip movement for power in the martial arts.

Should I also be modifying my grip? other suggestions?

The sway part sounds like something The Oyster would come up with.

This has a pretty low chance and will work better if it's a really good rack. When I do this shot, it seems like an amazing amount of time you scratch in the opposite far corner... the CB banks one rail straight in there. So I play it with a little low inside and run the CB 3 rails back towards the middle.

You have to hit the 2nd ball as full as possible without clipping the head ball. If you clip the head ball it's a disaster and you often scratch.

If you try too hard to miss the head ball and hit a little thinner than necessary, that's when I find you'll scratch cross corner the most. So the inside spin is insurance even though spin + a hard break is generally a bad idea.

oh i know, you just put a lol'y picture between my ears. i personally use second ball break if i break dry from the top. it's about speed more than anything else, and the optimum speed isn't nearly demanding martial art techniques. vary the speed and look for spread & path of the 8-ball. your grip should be as always, very loose.

I tried this out for a while after I watched a friend make the 8 on the break three times in a row with it. However, I always managed to send the cue ball flying off the table. I was catching the second ball flush, I just think I was hitting it too hard. So then I took a little off my break, and the rack didn't spread enough for my liking. I'm just sticking to the head ball for now. Although I do like to employ a slight cut break on the head ball once in a while ;)

come to think of it, try third ball breaks as well, maybe a little firmer than the optimum 2nd ball break. your ratio of making the 8 goes way down, but the spread is not bad at all which translates into decent pocketing ratio too.

I think you miss the front ball by too much space. I often, just using a little low, come above the rack to the middle of the table. And I hit it pretty hard too. The guys I see that lose the cue ball low are all hitting too far down on the second ball. They can hit allot higher and still not hit the front ball.

Just an observation!

It also helps with the BREAK cue WE use ;) :p

hope all is well Royce

RBC: probably right, maybe also I don't get close enough to the side rail. I'll try it again next time I play.
