Painting stripes on an Anniversary

I just bought an oversized 8' anniversary from a mechanic I have so far been very impressed with - it will be installed soon. The table will have new rubber, 4" pockets, new (replicated) skirts, new sheet metal for the legs, polished pocked castings. and 'imitation simonis' cloth. The rails are original formica. The new and old wood will be walnut stained with a semi gloss (varnish?). The installed price is $2500 which I think is an outstanding price. My question is about painting the groves on the skirts. This is an extra I could not afford and hope to do myself. The mechanic told me these should be pin striped not painted, but I don't really know what he meant. I assume this would require an air compressor and a pin striping fitting. Would it be ok to use a small brush to paint them by hand? If so should i use a white semi gloss or a high gloss enamel? If not is there some tape that would work?

You working on a CAR?...or a pool table?...I've never in 26 years pin stripped the side skirts of a pool table...maybe you could check with the Automotive forum guys...they might have a better answer:D

the Anniversary model looks great with pin stripping, find a detail person who has a special paint roller for this, it will look great painted!

Is this what you are talking about?!

Anniversary pin striping

Yes exactly as in tksix picture above. Again is there a way to do this myself .. I am a decent painter as far as walls but have no extraordinary skills. They do make pinstriping tape for cars in various widths ... or I could buy a detail roller if that is the way to go. I should add the groves are there just not painted.

Thanks for the input John and Mike. Glen, I was thinking maybe you and Joe from CueComponents could create a special chest pounding forum where you could specialize in creative ways to call the rest of the world morons.

Not a mechanic...................but how about taping the groove off and painting them. You can use a brush the exact size of the groove. Find any size you want at an art store.

You could try and tape it off then paint it . Most paint stores make an anti bleed glaze to assist taping. It allows for a crisp line on accent walls. Have you considered a furniture touch-up/refinisher. They may provide some help or direction.

First one I did years ago I used thin white tape looked good from afar but up close it stood out like a sticker. Paint it it will look alot better almost natural looking.

Thanks for all of the advice. I guess I will buy a small paint brush and tape it off and paint - I will look for the anti bleed glaze. I will go with a white high gloss enamel unless I hear otherwise.

You can buy thin white pinstriping(1/8") that goes in the groove without having to mask anything off. Maybe masking off to spray a clear coat over the pinstripe so that it is easy to clean. Just an idea..
