I think that the Johnny Archer fronted Players Association is a great step forward.
But I fear that it will all turn out to be a damp squib.
It has been posted up on it's own thread for many hours yet it has produced only reaction from two posters.
Will APATHY RULE again?

I am curious, why would you think that a players association is a 'great step forward'?
and then turn around and say that you 'fear that it will turn out to be a damp squib'?

Most strong player's unions form because someone is making a lot of money and taking advantage of the players. While the players have been taken advantage of at times it doesn't look to me like anyone is making a fortune promoting pool tournaments right now. If they make too much of a stink about putting money in escrow or something like that there is a danger that the promoter might say it's not worth it and just cancel the tournament.

I'm assuming (and this may be wrong) that the promoters who haven't paid out all of the prize money have done so because their income from the tournament was much lower than they planned and not because they paid themselves first.

I do like the idea of the players becoming more involved in promoting tournaments. I think having some pros show up at a league night and playing a set and/or playing challenge matches a week or two before a tournament would increase their recognition level amongst the average league player who doesn't follow pool on the internet at all and may help increase attendance at the tournament.

Tom, I fully support the initiative of the players in this development and I want it to succeed. But I have been around long enough to know that 'when push comes to shove' players will always say
PULL UP THE LADDER JACK. I'M OK.
I sincerely hope that I am wrong.

It's a pro organization. Only a few pros post on here. Johnnyt

I agree with Keith. Back in the day mosconi and a few others always did exhibitions before tournaments that crowds loved. I think the players taking more responsiblitiy and attracting a larger audience is a huge step forward. I also agree with raising awareness with the average league players. Those two things combined give me little bit of hope that this might work.

We have seen these associations come and go. Why should we care? If it works then we as fans will still watch the events we can.

The professional pool players in America are not charity cases. Most of them live a life that most of us would love to have, going where you want to playing pool and getting paid for it. There is no requirement to be a professional player and it's completely opt-in and opt-out.

Sure they don't make much money on average and certainly not anything near to what they should make commensurate with their skill but you know what? There are plenty of other sports, even "professional" ones where the participants aren't making jack either.

And getting stiffed by promoters happens in other sports as well. Ask any professional wrestler and he will tell you stories of promoters who stiffed the wrestlers.

So there is a new player organization. Great. Hope it works better than the last couple that they tried. MPBA, PCA, UPA.

As a fan I am burned out by pool politics. As a friend of many top pros I hope sincerely that they can take their own destiny in their hands and do something with it.

Oh and I hope that they are forward thinking enough to allow women to join.

Well that's what they are called. Although probably athletic showmen would be better. The point can equally apply to concert promoters and anyone who puts on events.

Hell I wouldn't be surprised to learn that someone somewhere ran off with the money from a spelling bee.

I always liked the idea of a players association but after watching the last few self-destruct I highly doubt any type of association like this can survive.

Honestly, do you think (no names) ANY of the top pros would tell a promoter that is doing a TV event and he/she is inviting 8 players to the event and the winner is guaranteed $25,000 and each other player is guaranteed $10,00 that they would decline to play because it wasn't sanctioned by the players organization?????

No they would not and NO they have not.

Until all, every player does this any pro players organization is not sustainable.

But hey, that's my opinion and even though I am a Doubting Thomas i do wish the players the best of luck in getting and keeping an association going.
