OB-1 Tip Change

I only use the OB-2 shafts right now, although I am using my son's OB Classic to test. I like the Everest Tip for the OB2 shaft, A LOT and won't be replacing it with anything else except an Everest tip.
There is one thing that is very important if you do change your Everest tip.
There is a hard carbon fiber patch on the ferrule of all OB shafts and if you change tip tip, you should give explicit instructions to your tip changer about leaving the fiber patch intact or replacing the hard carbon fiber patch with the same. (They are available from OB cues).

I`ve replaced several tips on mine Since I do repairs and build an ocassional cue or two I get to experiment alot.The harder the tip the more it changes the the play of the shaft(at least to me,feel/deflection)I`ve used tiger emeralds(play great on ob`s)snipers(little softer but plays good),Hercules(played ok).I would suggest if you like the way the current tip plays stay with that as a replacement,It should play the same.Make sure when it is replaced that the pad is not removed from the shaft.This is not a normal fibre pad.If you do need a pad I have some and live in spring hill so I`m not far from you.

Yes I believe you're right. I was just wondering if OB-1 shaft owners were changing away from the Everest that comes on it. I found the Everest fine, but wanted a tip that I had to work a little harder to put a lot of spin on the QB. I'm trying like hell to cut down on my spin the last few months and I've found I RO more (better QB control). Johnnyt
I switched my OB-1 to a Sniper tip and i'm very pleased with the way it plays. The tip seems to feel better and better the more you play with it. There's nothing wrong with an Everest tip, but my favorite tip is a Sniper and that's the reason I switched.......

Just out of curiosity, I would assume that when changing a tip, changing the carbon pad is NOT something you want to do as often as changing the tip. What kind of care needs to be considered when removing the tip but leaving the carbon pad? Same process as without a pad?

I just cut the old tip off with a razor knife a hair before the pad and then carefully use my sanding disc (manual) to get the rest of the tip off. I use 1 drop of Krazy glue and i'm playing with it in 10 minutes after that. Johnnyt

Do you use a lathe to trim the tip? I'm getting tired of paying $50 every three months for two tips (I have the tips trimmed down 50% of their size right off the bat, but I don't have a lathe and the Everest is a layered tip. I've always heard that layered tips have to be trimmed by a lather with a carbide blade going from the tip toward the ferrule.
I take mine down by sanding it to a dime about half of the tip comes off with a dime tool someone made for me. As far as trimming goes, I have 9 shafts from 12.5-13 mm dia. I don't use layered tips so I buy 13 mm tips and trim for the 12.5 mm shafts carefully with a porper. I did have a Everest layered on my OB-1 when I got it. I took it way down the same way and didn't seem to have a problem with it playing right.
Back will take some time this time around...I raised my table an inch to help my back and hurt it doing it lol. Thak you for asking. Johnnyt
