The "Riv"...

I feel the real attraction is the tourney/action. The Riv has seen better days. The Riv will close it's just a matter of how soon. If there is a viable location then hopefully they will be used as soon as feasible. The Riv is only a detraction to the experience at this point. Time to move on...

When I was at the bar at the Riv last week, the bartender told me somebody had recently purchased the place. He was sure they were going to stay open for a long time.

I love this thread! Cabbies and bartenders giving background info that show up on forums.... the Internet is an amazing tool!

P.S. Glad to hear the news!

Fatboy-

I am not sure what I am suppose to be reading in your link but I do read this 'On the Strip, gaming revenues in April were $437.3 million, a decline of just under 1 percent compared with $441.7 million collected in the same month a year ago.

For the first four months of the year, gaming revenues statewide are up 0.9 percent while the Strip's gaming revenues are up 7.2 percent.
' and 'Las Vegas grew visitor numbers by 0.9 percent in April, the eighth straight monthly increase.'

My GPS tells me that the 4 corners of Caesars/Bellagio/Bally's/Flamingo(Bill's Gambling Hall) is the Center of the strip. The South end of the strip would start with Excalibur and run to Mandalay bay. The North end of the strip would start with the Wynn and run thru the Sahara. If you want to wager which group of those hotels (North vs South) do a higher volume of business, let me know.

Also - let me straighten you out a little :) Vega$ business wise is not what it was 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. It is a completely different business model - at least for the hotels that are successful. Vega$ has now learned that money can be made at a profit level outside of gambling. I have plenty of raw numbers I can give you (sorry I don't get my #s from a website but rather from the source) and can give you plenty of examples of where the hotels are spending their money but let's just say for the successful hotels the split between gambling and entertainment (hotel, food, alcohol, shows) is not even a 50/50 split and the heavy side of the profits is on the entertainment side.

Don't leave town just yet buddy. Besides I will be back there in September - they are having a World Championship handball tournament on the parking lot of the Stratosphere and I will be there with my good friend, the 9 time World Champion. There will be action. Hopefully you will be feeling better then and won't ignore me.

p.s. For the poster that commented about events @ Bally's - The Imperial Palace is close to Bally's and has cheap rooms.

ballys, ceasars, bellagio is mid strip. There is big problems in this city that arnt gonna blow over I had a showing of my house yesterday to a guy who sold 150,000,000 of his company and kept 25% for him self so he is making about 8-10M/year onto of the $150M that was taxed at 15% long term capatal gains tax, he came to look to buy my house 2 days ago, I will txt you the offer, it shows what the image of Vegas is nowdays.

Again I'm very sorry I couldnt make it out to dinner, next trip my treat at a better joint(foods better not the eye candy:))

kindest regards

I completely agree!! The only thing I dislike about the Riv is the buffet. I personally like a familiar feel to tournaments - so since I have been going to the BCAPL for 15 years AT THE Riv, I like it there! I really like the Riv. Too many people *****. If it was somewhere else I'm sure there would be something they wouldn't like. ;)

I feel the same, it doesn't matter where the tournament is held someone is going to find something they don't like.:)

Like you, I've been going for over fifteen years. Like you, The Riv is comfortable. However in a different way. From my place in Sunrise Manor it's a twelve minute drive to The Riv. The Trop, Bally's and Orleans are at least another ten to fifteen minutes further away. South Point is at least a forty minute drive across town. I'd prefer the Riv.

As far as the food goes, I try hard to eat as many meals at home as possible. It really is one of the casinos weak points. Their captive audience has begun to drift away and seek alternate choices. The door nazi's are proof of that. Complaining it seems has become one of our National pastimes. Also one of our few choices. Complain, keep your mouth shut or don't go. Your choice!

Also all the roads around Ballys are busy roads and sometimes there a long delay in getting there even on the bus,at the Riv i often park in underground parkade, walk 100 ft to elevator and turn either way and be to my match,i think in most hotels furter down you will have some long walks through casino to pool room unless they are different than most

One hundred lashes with a piece of barbed wire:shocked2:. Shame on you for outing my secret parking place:nono:

You're right about the traffic problems. I usually take Washington to Bruce to Maryland to Karen to Paradise. Fast any time of day. The Tropicana will be an exercise in patience. 95 to Tropicana. Turn up the radio and the AC. Sit back and relax! Don't play TAP or Valley so Bally's is not a problem. Yet. Hope that bartender mentioned in another post is correct. The Riv forever!
