I just learned that Mike Massey will be at Match Ups in Fort Collins, Colorado for a trick shot exhibition and challenge matches July 10th at 6 PM. Not 100% sure of the start time so if interested, please contact Match Ups for details. I believe there will be a $10 charge for the festivities - well worth the price. If you've never met Mike or have seen his show, he's awesome!

He may have booked shows in other Denver locations but this is the only one I am aware of. Maybe others would chime in.

Thanks for the heads-up Dave. Saw Mike's show in the 80's in San Pedro, what he does with finger pool is unreal.

Yeah, his finger pool is the nutz! I can't wait to see it again, it's been about 7 years since I last saw it in person. Are you coming up?

Dave

We just had Mike at our cities. He's a great guy. He was playing people in 8 ball. I actually beat him 2 out of 3 times. I'm not sure how hard he was trying but he didn't get out the two times because he hooked himself on the last ball.
But he was fun to talk to and did some amazing trick shots.

Mike Massey was here in Myrtle Beach with Ewa Laurance putting on a trick shot show and a pool clinic a month ago. I love doing trick shots so this was great for me. Mike was an awesome guy, signing autographs, taking pics and talking to everyone there, GREAT guy! :D The finger pool blew people away, even me because I'd never seen it in person. He was playing people in 9 ball and running rack after rack with his old school stance. Even if you don't care for trick shots, go meet Mike, it's totally worth it. Ron

Mike is also in Longmont on July 11th at The Bit of Billiards. Same deal as Fort Collins.

Nice. I'm glad Mike's making the rounds. I hope the Colorado community will support him so he will be back in the future.

Is Mike Massey in town to take some lessons from Dr. Dave?

Eric

:) No, but I'm guessing they will meet.

I know you were kidding, but Dave is a very valuable resource for us all. He has compiled so much free information and videos on his website of what "really happens" in pool that people have been curious about and asked him to test on video. And he discusses the physics of the game so we can better understand what "really happens" then we can use that info if it makes sense to us. Not sure why people are concerned about his playing level, which is above average but not great by any stretch, all he does is take the time to prove what others are asking about. He is after all, a Mechanical Engineering professor at CSU so he does have another job ;).

His and Tom Ross's dvd's (set of 5) are awesome and jam packed with great information - Tom did most of the shooting and is a very good player and instructor. This is a video version of the 99 critical shots in pool by Ray Martin in my mind, but they show over 700 shots (some are similar but it's a lot). Well worth the investment.

Sorry for the mini-rant, I hope I took your post the right way, if not...never mind :). But I for one, thank Dr. Dave for all he has contributed to pool...and most of it for free!

Dave

Just bumping this up from page 7 for Colorado folks that may not have seen it. Hope Mike will get a great turnout in all the venues he is visiting (Fort Collins & Longmont is all I know for now).

Dave

Dave,

Thanks for your supportive message. I appreciate it.

I'm glad you think my playing level is at least "above average." I've gotten a lot better this past year ... even though my playing level has nothing to do with anything. Just because I can't aim and stroke perfectly all of the time, and don't always have perfect speed control, doesn't mean I don't understand and appreciate how to play top-level pool.

Regards,
Dave

When Francine is with Mike, she gets to caddy the object balls for Mike's "limbo" shot. The last time I saw his show, she was not there and I got to be caddy. On his last throw, the "limbo" object ball was less than two balls from the end rail.

Here's the Limbo Shot:

I've also 'caddied' for Mike on this shot. It might take him a few tries when the OB gets that close to the rail...but it is an AMAZING shot nonetheless, and I've never seen anyone as adept at it as Mike is (Reeves Smith is pretty good at finger pool too!).

We were playing with this at my house, I had new 860HR that was slippery like glass, I set the OB on the spot, mike looked at me with the WTF look on his face, I didn't think he could get the rock to bite the cloth, 4-5 throws later we had it about 2balls distance off the back cushion, it might as well been 3" off, how he does that is amazing. He stays with me, below it says he what's with me, darn iPad I can't edit that part,

Bob is there anyone elses in the world that can do that?

I'm very blessed I met mike through a mutual friend and we hit it off instantly, so when ever he is in Vegas and some times in la he what's with me, he has showed me some super hard shots, one is a fuete' style shot, it's among the hardest other than time shots, it's a big spin, swerve shot I have came 3" short once and. 4-5' short many times, man I hit it hard too. Someday, mike is so great that when he shows you a shot and you make it he is happier than anyone in the room, his love and passion for pool is amazing.

Mike is one of my favorite people in the world his passion, generosity, etc. Are so great- I sure was lucky to meet him. Francine is great as well ,she is good for mike.

Bob, don't forget is there anyone who can spin the rock and make. 90. Degree turns??

Best Eric

And thanks

Reeves Smith is pretty good at finger pool, but not for a big shot like the Limbo. Mike doesn't even have to work to get the hook.

I too have been lucky enough to "caddie" for Mike in the past. If Francine is not here, maybe I will do it again. Thanks for adding to the thread, Bob.

Yep. It's amazing how when one actually puts in practice time, one gets better. Maybe there's something to that HAMB ("Hit A Million Balls") method after all. :grin-square:

I'm sorry, but this just come across as arrogant and naive.

Just because one may have some pool knowledge/theory, basically, knowing what sounds about right on paper, doesn't mean that one has all the tools and ability of playing top level Pool.

I feel it's disrespectful to those that do play top level Pool, as well as very arrogant to have the attitude that "all I need to do is play more and I can get there".

What if one doesn't know how to, or can't master the "other things" that go into playing top level Pool? Hell, knowledge of how to make a shot and get position is only a portion of what you need to master. What about the ability to execute and the knowledge of knowing how to make your mind and body execute? Then, there is the mental game. Some say that this is the hardest part to master, to play high level Pool.

Long story, short; one can practice 25 hours a day and never figure out how to get above a certain level. To think that all you need to do is play more, to get to top level (even though you've never gotten to that level) with no experience of what it took to get there, is naive and laughable.

Perhaps you should stick to the one area of Pool that you are an expert in; slow mo videos & how the balls really react. That is some truly great info. But please, don't let that fool you into thinking that you are now an expert in all things Pool.
