I received this cue the other day. The joint was melted and mangled. My work order says it needs a new insert and the butt collar fixed. Now, the pin is in the shaft so I didn't think it was a big deal. I sleeved the brass collar back on after I cleaned up the melted parts. Then, I started to bore for the insert and hit some "hidden" metal. Well, I had to get that out to see what I was dealing with. Here it is. Does anyone know who made it and what it was supposed to look like? I tried to call the customer and he is out of town for a while.

I have not seen one of those fail before, so I have never seen the insides of the joint, but the cue looks like a Burton Spain. If it is a delrin inside joint I would guess the threaded stud was his way of getting the glue to hold Delrin.
I always wondered how he was getting that to hold. Like I said this is the first one I have seen fail, so it must have worked okay under normal circumstances.
 
Here's the repair so far. I have most of the new parts cut and the new stud installed.

I would think so looking at how it is made. That is about the only reason I could see for doing it that way. You get to see some things in your massive repair business that most of us will never get to see. I appreciate you showing us these internal makings of cues. It can show us how not to do things, and it can also help us to come up with new ways to do things.

I do get to see a lot of interesting cues and techniques. My problem with this one is that is was so messed up, I didn't know what it was supposed to be. The joint was completely melted inside of the brass sleeve so it wasn't that the joint style failed, it was someone who failed with the cue. I tried to call the customer before I posted it here but he is away from home until the beginning of August.

hummmm....i wonder if someone didn't possibly polish on the brass and get it really hot? What do you think it looks like ryan?

Looked like heat from fire; brittle, bubbly, and slight discoloration of the brass. I'm guessing not a torch but probably a lighter.
