It was a great pool day in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They were having a pool tournament at the Temple Lounge. Jerry Brieseth is there to give some lessons and put on a show.
There were about 64 teams for this event. The stage was set for alot of excitement.
There were 2 guys there from out of town that nobody knew. they wanted to play someone. They were asking around to play and finally a bunch of my friends were trying to get $1000 together and they were going to ask Jerry to play these guys.
The one guy said his name was Butch. He didn't want to say his real name but it wouldn't have mattered much because we didn't know any of the great pool players around the country. He had another guy with him that had blond hair. i think he said his name was Rod.
Anyway, when i heard my buddies were trying to get this money together I told them that Jerry isn't playing people anymore, he is mostly teaching. But they were still bound and determined that this was their best bet at trying to beat these 2 guys.
Now I had been on the road a little bit at this time in my life and I was very capable of beating alot of players. I had no idea that this was CJ Wiley but then again it wouldn't have mattered much because I didn't know him anyway.
Trying to save my friends some money i went up to these guys and picked a game for $40 a rack 9-ball. Everyone gathered around to watch. There was quite a crowd. The 2 tables in this area had elevated seating on just about every side.
The tables were dynamos with the heavey red dot cue ball. It wieghed about 50#. Hard to draw or do anything with. I just had to be careful to try and play mostly natural shape.
The match started out pretty good for me. Pretty soon I had Butch stuck $400.00 approximately. Then the shit hit the fan.
He started jumping over balls with the full cue, which at this time we had hardly ever seen. He did things with the cue ball that we had never seen done before.
I got back to even and quit feeling that i was way outmatched but mission was accomplished. My buddies didn't waste their money and this pool monster was exposed.
Little did I know until we saw his picture in the magazines that this was CJ Wiley.
Our little match lasted a few hours. But it was locked in time forever.
One of my favorite pool memories back in the late 70's or early 80's.
Don't remember the exact year but the memory is most important.
I wonder if CJ Wiley would remember the YEAR??????
And who it was that was with him............???????
Who knows, maybe we could have a rematch again in the near future. You never know in this pool world..........
