Cleaning up the sport

I alwyas hear how everyone is trying to clean up pool. If this is the case what are they trying to do? We all know they aren't doing drug testing and that is one of the big complaints from parents why they don't want their kids haninging out in pool halls.

Prove to the parents and the community that this is a clean sport on the Pro side and maybe you will get a spark.

I know at our local room I've been trying to get them to wipe the chalk off the rails, but they won't even do that.

Moving to Asia might be the best bet right now. I do not see the image changing in the U.S. for a long time...if ever

So drugs are the problem, eh? I always thought it was the degenerate gambling, the unambitous people, the tendency to draw kids away from the classroom if they get hooked on pool, the century old reputation as a den of iniquity, the non-stop hustling, and the unique ability of pool to draw out the absolute worst in people.

Not that I ever took them...but...I lost count how many times I was offered drugs throughout my 4 years in high school.......(perhaps that is why they call it "high" school)

I have never once been offered drugs while being in a pool room.

The "problem" is the way pool is portrayed on TV.....It will always be the "hustlers" sport.........IMO there is a large group that likes it that way......for proof....just look at the boom in action that the movie TCOM caused.

If you are drug testing , then I take it they are employees with a salary. And who is paying them enough to demand they pass a drug screen ? Have pros been cutting their fingers off at the table ? Or acting stupid ? I
guess they could poke someone with their tip . Yep..... isolate those reefer addicts lol
Guess they should do a breathalyzer also . You had better make it worth some ones time if you are telling them what to do on their free time . Which is most of the time

I agree with BRKNRUN. Are pro's portraying "drug user" images or tendencies? If so I am not aware of it. I think you may have your priorities mixed up. This isn't baseball where guys are shooting up or snoting a line before a football game lol. Plus, there isn't even an official governing body, how do you regulate that?

I think that if pros get sponsored the sponsors should ask for a drug test....

Fair enough, if thats what the sponsor wants. But what happens if they fail, there is still no serious implications aside from loosing some cash, but they can still play. I don't think there is enough big sponsorship dollars to affect the masses. And the ones that do have big sponsors...well they are probably the least likely to use drugs.

i agree with you here and I hate to. pool in my opinion is it's own worst enemy. Just watch AZ here. the thread that get the most views and most feedback are all about the seedy side of the game. just look at the latest Dippy Dave stuff and this guy can't spell pool. he just has lot's of money and has spread some around.
Abut 1 year ago Black Jack was in Florida and made like 10,000 balls in a short period to help a small child and only a few even bothered to say"nice job".
Jeremy Jones came home after winning the US Open and spent like 3 days in Children's Hospital and I doubt many even knew of it.
there are many good people in the game today and to me, it is cleaner than it ever has been.
We are so impressed with the dump talk, the con talk, and the big scores. That is a small part of it. People read and get their impressions largely from our reviews of the game.
The last time I was in Vegas Tom Rossman was putting on a clinic for a large group and was really entertaining. Suddenly Bucktooth went into his act and yelling above Tom.People were honestly laughing at the infantile egomaniac and totally disrespected Tome who was doing his thing,,,for nothing.
pool has some very strange hero"s if you really look at it. Some who should be are rarely even noticed.
why are we so enthralled with the gambling stories. there is less gambling in the game than ever before?
Don't get me wrong, I am old school for sure and grew up in that stuff, but it is gone and I believe forever but pool as a society does not want to believe it nor let it go. people get their impressions from our reviews!

Pool/Billiards is a game meant to be played and enjoyed and there is always going to be 2 sides to it, the seedy side and the commercial side all making money in different ways.

Well, it's not the game of pool that needs to be cleaned up, but pool rooms and there are just some low lifes in the game just like in the top pro sports.

You really think parents stopped their kids from playing baseball because of steriods use?

Best example I have is in the DFW area. There are no pool rooms. Just smokey bars with table, cept maybe for the Billiard Den, but its been a awhile since I been there. Yes, I have been to Clicks, Hawleys, Speeds, Rusty's in Arlington and a few more.

I learned to play back in the late 60's at the city recreation center. There were no pool rooms anywhere close to where I lived. Thats the other area where pool needs to be in a city recreation center.

Whenever this topic of what pools needs comes up, I'm surprised that no one expects the room owners to do anything to help grow the sport. Its either more money or some form of new tourney or a players org and so on.

Room owners need to realize they have a very important place in helping to grow the sport, to get families back in.
