Rules Question

I recently played a guy that used a weight on his cue, I guess to stay down on hard shots. He played all his shots up to this point normally, but this one long straight in shot he slipped a round weight over his shaft. I never witnessed anyone do this before and thought

Legal?

I didn't say or question him using the weight, didn't care either way, I just found it strange.

As long as it didn't cause the cue to go over 25oz, I'd have to say that his gimmick/gadget would be considered acceptable, rule wise.

YOu witnessed it and didn't inquire re: the reasoning?

You know, something tactful, like 'hay! WTF are you doin that for?'

This is simply an educated guess, but here goes.

If a player can add one of those slip on extensions on the butt, for a long shot. I don't see a reason why a weight can't be added for a shot.

Hopefully Jay will chime in and set the record straight.

This (or something very similar) was invented by Pat Fleming. It is like a 6-inch length of 7/8-inch pipe with two washers inside -- I have one around here somewhere. It slides onto the shaft and the washers hold it in place. There is no explicit rule about it right now that I know of. I think you would have to ask the TD for a ruling, but I would not be surprised if a TD ruled against it. A less controversial alternative would be a weighted shaft.

Do you know the reasoning behind it? Seems to me it would be more effective to weight the butt (to help keep the stroke straight for those long shots).

Dang, the answer is more questions...

No, he didn't make the shot...

It was a long straight in shot (slow roll)

He placed the round washer weight on the shaft about half way.

It was my first time meeting this gentleman, he was a great opponent. I have nothing bad to say about him, I just found it strange. Plus, any time the guy I'm playing digs out a$$ weights, I like my chances:grin-square:

I don't care when my opponents use the weights but I hate waiting for them to put on their beekeepers suit.
