My day started out like the usual battle. Head to the YMCA and get in the whirlpool. Loosen up the knees and get the shoulder rotating well.
Then it's off to a small tournament at Top Shots in La Crosse, Wisconsin. I'm excited about going there because now there is no smoking. There are so many players that I've known over the years that play down there. It will kind of be like a family reunion of pool players.
It's about an hour and 1/2 drive and when I get there I find out that the tourny was canceled and the owner Art had already left. They told me there was another tourny at Winona, Minnesota but I was informed that nobody hardly showed up there either.
So I commenced to practicing with one of the local players. They have an all day summer special for only $6.00 so I might as well get some much needed practice. During the summer in Wis pool kind of dies. The weather is so nice it's hard to stay inside. It's almost like someone turned on the climate control. It's perfect outside.
About 3 hours later in walks Lenny (DePole) JASZEWSKI. I know I spelled the name wrong but that is how it sounds. Lenny has been one of the main staples in the pool world in La Crosse for years. Doing numerous trick shot exibitions and always being there in the tournys and yes he can play and is very competitive. He also sells pool table and supplies with his business call Exclusively Billiards. And by the way Lenny is a certified BCA Master instructor and he totally endorses Perfect Aim.
Lenny is the man in the La Crosse area to help you increase your pool knowledge. I really don't know why I'm saying this. Everyone in the area already knows this.
I'm proud to have Len as a good friend.
He's just been great for the game of pool in La Crosse and the surrounding area. He has the nick name The King of Diamonds. Some of you might know him from that. His knowledge of the game is huge.
Lenny and myself practiced for about 2 hours. I started asking about the other tourny in Winona and lenny said to me. let's go over there. I told him lets call first. it turns out they had 28 players for the tourny. There was still about 12 left in it so Lenny and myself headed over there. It's about a 40 minute drive.
The place in Winona is the Athletic Club. It is run by Terry Howell an old friend of mine in the Wisconsin pool world. He's got 4 bartables and makes one hell of a pizza from scratch there. It's in one of these buildings that is about 100 years old but it is very solid and has very high ceilings.
As I walked in I could not believe the reception. I was so happy to see these players. players that I hadn't seen for years plus other players that I had never met. They were all a little puzzled why I was there at their little pool tourny so one by one I took them into the other room and showed them how Perfect Aim works. I gave them all a little mini lesson.
It seemed like everyone wanted to know what I had to teach. Then I realised why. Not only were some of them at the Ho Chunk Tourny 2 months ago but 3 or 4 of the 12 there are fellow AZers. They alrerady know alot about my travels and teachings of perfect Aim.
Here the day started out it seemed almost a total loss as far as playing in a tourny and maybe giving a lesson or 2. And then to coming here in Winona and meet many old friends and needing to go back to Winona to give as many as 6 to 8 Perfect Aim lessons. Now I'm in total heaven that I can share what I teach to some old friends and also some new ones.
And then I found out a little secret they have there in Winona. They have put together a private club. I was told there is bartables there, 9 footers and a billiard table. What a neat deal. These players over there have created their own little world to enjoy the game they love and the monthly membership is only $35 per month.
I can't wait to go back over there for the first lesson on thursday and see this Billiard club. I think it's great.
It's like, No pool hall, No problem, we'll just make our own place to play.
So as you can see, a day that seemed like a total washout turns into a very rewarding day. As I was driving home I was just thinking about how great the day had turned out.
Now that Wisconsin is smoke free I will be getting to many of the places that were off limits to me. Every place I seem to go here it is like meeting part of your family that you havn't seen for years.
