Got My OB Classic Pro!

Great review... very informative.

I was thinking about pulling the trigger on an OB shaft for my Pechauer. I was thinking OB-1, but after reading your review, I'm not sure.

Have you hit the OB-1 before? If so, how does it compare to the Classic Pro?

Sorry, I have not hit with the OB-1, but I have hit with the OB-2 (but not on my cue) and the OB-2 is more quiet, and has more flex. I know the OB-1/2 are both foam-cored, so there's less sound and vibration than what people expect. it's very "muted", from what I can tell.

I'm pretty sure I saw a thread that's a review of the differences between the 1 and 2 if you can find it. Try the Cue and Shaft Review forum here.

stljohhny, thanks for taking time to share your review and feedback. i would be interested in hearing from you after a month or so of play with this combo. i played a pechauer/OB2 combo for a year and made a lot of balls, however i just swithed to a custom/OB1 with the stock everest tip. i would like to hear how you like the SS tip after it is broken in a bit.

Thanks again,

Mike

I got my OB Classic Pro on Monday, and although I was pretty sick, I had to go test it out. Here's my review summation: I LOVE IT!!

If you'd like to read more details about all the wonderful things I did with it, I'd appreciate you reading that here: http://johnny101.com/post/2010/09/29/OB-Classic-Pro-Review.aspx

I read your review there... you only describe shots with inside english. Do you compensate outside engl. with OB compared with older shaft?

We all know that inside, for whatever reason, seems to be the most problematic when including deflection in the aiming equation. But, you make a good point. I don't even mention outside english at all.

As for that...the only time I noticed a lack of deflection was when I was pretty close to a ball and had to use outside to get on the next one. Normally, I'd have to aim a little thinner to take into account the cb will deflect towards a thicker hit because of the outside. I almost never do that accurately, and honestly, i didn't even consider the shaft difference. I only know it worked because i made the ball; a ball which I almost always miss then wonder why, then realize it was deflection... but i never remember that shot for some reason.

For another example, I love this soft stroke shot: object about a ball off the rail, 1st diamond near the corner, cb opposite rail 3rd diamond... cut ball into the corner, use draw/outside to get passed opposite side pocket.

when i shot that with my stock shaft, i made the shot often enough - but i did so because i spun it in, instead of cutting it on. with the ob classic, when i first tried it, i over cut (cut+spin) the ball straight down the table. once i adjusted my aim to the true contact point, instead of the deflection-aim-point, the shot went as planned.

I plan on getting some more table-time tonight, so maybe i'll bring my video cam and set up some very standard and easy to demonstrate deflection tests. :)

TY for answer... very good observation IMO.

I wish they would update their website... but the classics have been available since at least the summer. I want to say they came out around the DCC-ish? I remember reading lots of "previews" and "rumors" and a prototype review thread exists somewhere.

Pooldawg and azbmarketplace both have them available (though not with as many collars as the ob1/2 yet).

Thanks. I'll check those two sites out.

Probably because on outside english shots the object ball throw and cue ball swerve counter-act the effect of the squirt, often to the point where you don't have to adjust at all.

Thanks for the review- I'm a big fan of OB's products. I play with an OB-1 on a Pechauer.

I absolutely love my OB Classic Pro. Royce came on the forums a while back and was giving pre-order discounts, but I didn't have the spare cash at the time. I picked it up not too long ago and wish I had sooner. I'm easily 3 or 4 balls better now that I have to think a whole lot less about deflection.

I've been wanting something new to interest me...new TV, receiver, jump cue, macbook pro...whatever...just something new.

I'm not gonna lie...your review of the OB Classic was so cool I think I might have decided on a new thing to try! I'm not too interested in the pro, but the OB Classic might be just right. It sounds interesting. At very least it will be a cool backup shaft.

Thanks for sharing your interest in your new shaft! I really appreciate that kind of stuff and think that your post represents the real heart of what this forum is here for.

Now that they have a white ferrule, I was thinking about getting the OB Classic Pro. I tried the OB-2 and liked it over my Z2, I just didn't like the wood ferrule while I was down on my shot. Seyberts has had them for a while. >>>>>>>>>>>>>LINK<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Hey Johnny,

Exactly what is the taper like? I'm considering one very soon, but I'm not a big fan of the parabolic taper or smaller mm diameter of the OB-2. I like more of a standard taper, I guess since that's all I have ever used.

Thanks,
Mike

The taper seems to be a straight back taper. conical, i think is the technical term (?). It's very slight, but it seems like no 2 places are the *exact* same width; which I was really unsure about, since my other shaft had a 15inch taper and I really liked it. But, this is so thin to start with I really don't even notice the difference after a few balls.

3 or 4 balls!!!!!!!!! now that's saying something

That really is quite a statement. I've only shot with it twice, and both times i've been sick, but I will say that I'm cutting thin shots that i would never attempt with my old shaft, and feel great about doing it. I feel like I pocket balls better, but I haven't done any serious drills to see how (if at all) my positions have changed. In the "just for fun" games of 9-ball and one pocket, I do seem to be getting, in general, better shapes - but I can't exactly credit that all to the shaft. the week leading up to it's arrival i was playing really well - better than i had in a long time. so perhaps i've just started a new growth spurt and the timing coincided with the shaft?

Hi there, Johnny,

enjoy to see how much you like your new shaft :ö)
Thx for the review- i ve heard now from several people that the new *pro-shaft* from ob (without this *whole* or whatever it s called) has a much better feeling/hit than the *old* one.

keep shooting Johnny,

I was in a bit of a minor slump before I got it. I find it SO much easier to stop thinking and let the shot happen with the classic pro. That, combined with enjoying the hit and feel of the shaft, has put me at 3-4 balls better now that I've had it for a couple months. No more slump and I'm back on the climb of improvement.
