Why should pool halls have normal sized pockets??

It's about collision and spin induced a throw. I guess my point is that tight pocket tables probably should have very clean balls to minimize throw. This morning when rubbing two balls together I noticed little scuff marks that cause extra friction between the balls only at certain points.

On my own table at home I have 4.25" deep shelf pockets. I practice quite a bit on that table. I haven't cleaned the balls in over a month. My thinking was that pool halls have dirty balls (for the most part) so the table I practice on should also. Well this morning I am practicing and decide to polish and clean the balls because of the scuff marks. Polishing (no wax of course) makes the game much easier on this tight table.

In real world applications most pool halls do not clean the balls as often as we might like. I guess I am wondering what is your opinion about having tight pockets in a pool hall where the balls aren't cleaned daily? Do my thoughts have some merit? Has anyone else noticed sensitivity to unpolished balls on tight pocket tables?
 
I completely agree. IMO If rooms are going to have Diamonds and other tight tables they have to keep the balls AND cloth clean. A tight Diamond with clean cloth and balls plays great and fair. When they are dirty...they can get very very tough.
 
Yep, nasty balls will cause you some problems. Even old balls can create unwarranted difficulty. Why shouldn't the balls be cleaned every so often in a tournament or High Stakes match. It's not enjoyable having to overcome French Fry grease, spit, hair gel, gum, chalk dust & almost anything imaginable, just to make a shot. But... what can be expected when every class of life comes into a Pool Room.


About pockets on a pool Table, I ask;

why shouldn't every Pool Table have the same size pockets? Regulations are regulations. While some players may get a boost to their ego because they can play with more precision, Pool Table standards & regulations make it simpler to go from Room to Room to Play POOL.

If we are gonna change things to weed out normal players from competition with the great players, why not move the Goal Posts to within 3 feet of each other. Maybe we should move the pitcher's box up 25 feet & lower the Basket to 6 feet..

Hi Charlie,
It would seem that pocket size, shelf depth and facing angles all vary a bit for various reasons. Take the bar box that rarely rattles a ball. Once a ball goes past those points it's gonna drop. If that table payed any harder then it wouldn't net as much per hour form the coin drop. So, pockets are designed differently for various reasons and not always in consideration to the pool player.

I totally understand what you are saying.

My "view of the subject", was this: I do not see a need to re-vise a Pool Table to have Double or Triple shims.

IMO shooting into smaller pockets makes you bare down more. Since shooting on this table I am more able to hit dead center and better able to cheat pockets. It also makes me focus on my stroke, aim and striking cue ball precisely where intended. So this makes me a fan of having small pockets on a practice table.

I am on par with you that pockets on tables in a pool hall shouldn't be reduced in size due to the lack of maintenance that seems to be more common than good maintenance.

I'm only half-joking here, but why is it that a size 9 shoe isn't the same size all the time, depending on the brand? Probably the same reason the pocket sizes aren't the same...
