Hey everyone, I am going to be running a weekly 3 cushion tournament out of Cue Nine in Levittown NY and I was wondering what format we should follow with only two heated chevillote tables.

Approximately 6-8 players per week of varying abilities etc.

My issue is that I know I need to have this event be handicapped but I am not quite sure how.

If anyone can get in touch with some ideas it would be hugely appreciated.

ForumGhost516,

May I offer a suggestion ? The USBA wants to encourage local rooms to run
handicap tournaments. It also has formulated a handicapping system that seems equitable(obviously some will always complain regardless).

The idea is to help facilitate and promote these local tourneys. Handicaps will be logged in a data base and used to run a national handicap tournament with a substantial payout. Each local tournament operator will include a $2 per person per tournament earmarked for the national prize fund. Everyone that has played in enough tournaments to establish an average/handicap will be eligible to compete in the venue currently slated for Las Vegas.

Bruce Warner and Jim Shovak are busy putting the final touches together.

Please feel free to share your input and hopefully be one of the first local tournaments to start the ball rolling (pun intended).

Steve thank you so much for getting back to me I have now officially scoured the USBA site and have actually learned quite a bit. I have gotten in touch with Jim Shovak in regards to this and these upcoming events and I look forward to him getting back to me.

Thanks so much again

Your in good hands, etc...

Hi my name is Jay, Jay Siegel. I've played both pool and 3 cushion all over NYC and LI over the last 30 years and have the pleasure of knowing Jim for good deal of 20 of them. Jim's passion and enthusiasm for the game is second to none, he actually appears to me at least, as a true, true devotee of the game. I knew him as a pool player first and a total 3 cushion novice. Boy he's put his time in....

Anyhow, handicapping 3 cushion tournaments is definitley not easy, to say the least, and absolutely thankless... as is the case with running most handicapped events. Back to Jim... if anyone can get you moving in the right direction here, Jim can.

Good luck with both the tournament and your new room. I played there when it was Leisure Time years ago... I grew up playing first in Rockville Centre, then Guys and Dolls in Valley Stream, Baldwin Billiards, The House of Lords, Rack'em Up in Richmond Hill(where I met Mr. Shovak, and his darling Uncle Jim also) and the infamous Golden Que on Queens Blvd.... just to name a few.

Do both Mike Morgan and Lou the retired cop play there?? Whitey? is he stilll around? Yes it's been a while...

Take care and good luck again!

The only weekly h-cap tournament that i ever played in was at world class billiards in peabody,ma. They used a point system for levelling the field. A beginner would go to say 8 points while the experienced player would have to make 15 or more. It worked pretty well as I remember.

Also, consider the double elimination format with limited innings to reduce the play time. I was running monthy tournaments on a single table. 12 points or 25 innings. 5-7 players takes about 5-6 hours. The beauty is that you can modify the format easily based on the number of players that show up. Like 4 players would be 15 points or 30 innings, etc.

Best of luck.

I agree with the sentiments shared by Jay Siegel regarding Jim Shovak. Jim is a good man who wants 3C to flourish in the U.S. I am usually in agreement with the direction he wants to take our organization. What he needs are more troops on the ground willing to donate a little time (and money) to help bring the plans to fruition.

As everyone knows who has run tournaments/leagues/organizations for any length of time. The 90/10 rule applies. 90% of the work is done by 10% of the people. That is not going to change any time soon.

On a positive note, there are a lot of talented people that are willing to keep 3C alive and well.

We need to have a membership/fundraising drive so our plans for promoting 3C can be realized.

Thoughts?

ForumGhost516, you didn't say if the weekly tournament are USBA Sanction or Non Sanction? Have you thought about the USBA SHOT CONTEST Tournament?

Its funny you say that I am signing up this week with my home room to have the events be sanctioned, plus we are also looking into the shot tourney as well.

I am eagerly awaiting Jim's call and I am looking very forward to the end results even more.

Thanks so much to everyone who has responded with their suggestions and opinions as they were all valued.
