Gerda likes VEPS!!!

I got a message from Gerda Hofstatter yesterday concerning the Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots (VEPS), and I had to share it with you guys because it makes me so proud (in fact, it "made" my day, week, month ... and maybe even my year!). Here it is:

In case you're wondering, I did ask Gerda for permission to post the message publicly and she agreed.

Do you think Gerda has improved so much this past year because she has been studying VEPS so thoroughly?

As one of your bigger detractors (don't agree with some of your other stuff), I feel that your work with a slo mo camera is cutting edge and a bit of a mythbuster. It's very good for things such as taking the guess work out of spin transfer, etc.

I really like VEPS; my only less-than-stellar comments have always been production related, but that's because I got spoiled with the Mika series as my first purchase. oops.

But VEPS does have more info... i only wish I could watch it with a table nearby so i could watch it and try and reproduce everything without having to try and draw it out for an attempt after driving to the pool hall.

Sounds like a good excuse to get a portable dvd player or laptop (I enjoy justifying purchases that I normally wouldn't make).

hahaha - i know, right? I keep thinking about trying to persuade the pool room to get a tv/dvd combo so we can watch accu-stats videos or training videos or... something; when it's slow up there.

y'know, i do have a netbook that's not really being used in the house, i bet i could take that guy up to the pool hall... hrmmm...

FYI, I've been presenting many of the highlights from VEPS in my recent series of articles for Billiards Digest (12 articles so far, more to come). If you want to work on those things, and you don't have a computer close to a table, you can print the articles. They you could work from the printed diagrams.

Also, if you did want to practice other stuff from the DVDs, I (and others) have lots of blank, printable diagrams you can use to easily draw up some of the shots. Here they are, under "table diagrams":

This is awesome, Mr. Dr.. I agree that it is the most comprehensive work on pool out there - no sugar coating, no pin ball, just pool info. You should have called it "Ames". Glad to see you getting the recognition you & Tom deserve.

BTW, what the heck does "Ames" mean. Is it an acronym that I'm too dense to figure out?

The best I can come up with is: "All Must Educate Soon" or "A Miracle Encyclopedia for Sure" or "A Menu for Extreme Success" or "Aiming Made Extremely Simple" (is that the one?) :grin-square:

I was about to post something about this over the weekend but I felt like a "johnny come lately" and did not pull the trigger.

I bought these a few months ago and did not have time to look at them but just last week I started and have looked at disc 1 and a little bit of 2.

I think they are pretty darn good so far. I was reminded about something about aiming ( Ghost ball center and then pivot the cue.) that I used on some tough cuts last week and every thing was going in. A mentor of mine felt compelled to yell out "Shooter in the house". I don't know if it will keep happening.

The 30 degree follow angle was also very helpful. I basically did it on feel and got in the general area before.

I'm looking forward to spending more time with it and refining my game and my position play.

I'm glad you like what you see so far. There's a lot more to come in Discs III, IV, and V (although, the stuff on Discs I and II is extremely important, IMO).

I'm embarrassed to say I've only watched the 1st DVD of the VEPS series. I thought that was fantastic. It's one thing to have the kind of comprehensive knowledge you do. And it's another separate skill to be able to distill it to the most fundamental aspects and present those clearly.

What I saw was really first rate material with a lot of insight.

I just ordered the five-dvd package
