best in canada

Here's my opinion on this ..

Klatt seem to be the man to beat right now in Canada from his result in the state ...

Moora is close but not yet , i say give him a year or 2 more for the experience and he's going to be the Futur TOP canadian ..

Martel has nothing else to prove in Canada , he's the man right now , but against Klatt i would love to see it ..

Martel played Hjorleifson race to 60 on one of the hardest table they have and Martel won 60-46 ( Here's the link to see the match Martel VS Hjorleifson

Also Hewitt .. when he's in stroke he's a beast that can destroy Anyone ...

(On a side note : a guy from Montreal name Martin Lalonde who just became a pro about a month ago , played Hewitt in the Quebec Provincial Tourney , race to 9 , Hewit won the first game , then safety battle for the 2nd game wich Martin won , and then proceed to put a 8 pack for the match against Hewitt.. let me say that was pure beauty to watch and that 8 pack was without any position error or anything ... So he won , then he played Alain Martel after , started the match with a 5 pack ... So he's going to be one to watch in the futur !! )

So hard to say but my vote goes to Klatt and Martel...

There you have it .. :P

Alex if he even counts.
Klatt and Morra today
Tyler Edey and Edwin are very high up on that list if not at the top.
PJ can give most a run for their money.
Everyone speaks very highly of Vidas's game but he dosent play anymore. (WTF Mikey?)
Bernie Mikkalsen and John Jorgenson for the seniors. JJ dosent even have to aim anymore. He wills the balls in with his mind.
LOL guess if I mention JJ I have to mention Norway just to make it fair.
Then you have players like Stan and Frenchy. And that is how many people play pool in Canada. Almost a dozen.

Does Alex still consider himself "Canadian"? If he does, I'll say Alex is the best "in Canada". Outside of that it seems Jason Klatt is performing best on an international level with John Morra right behind him.

As for best Canadian ever, it's tough to argue against Cliff Thorburn. Outside of Alex, no one in Canada has accomplished as much as he has on the international stage.

Well............ how "lucky" we are that we Calgarians have the "best" pool player of Canada in here!! :grin-square:

When Edwin was actually playing pool about 3-4 years ago in the Canadian 9-ball tour that Jim Wych set up he proved pretty clearly that he was very possibly the best in Canada. He won way more then his share of the events against fields full of the best players in Canada.

And in the last month he put up a 10k challenge to Morra straight up 10-ball, race to 100. The only condition was Morra come to Calgary, which seemed fair since Morra has been playing serios pool in the USA in big matches and Edwin has been 9/10ths retired and playing poker.

Truth be told you have proven by your posts on this forum you know very little about the pool scene or the players "Calgaryplayer". You would not know how good Edwin actually is or how good the others that might be in the running would be either.

I played in a 9 ball tournament a month and a half ago that Cliff was at.
It was the Cliff Thorburn tourny as he was the invited guest. Cliff spent a bit of time in Regina in his younger days and is always happy to come back and visit with old acquaintances. He had some stiff competition but came thru with flying colors. After the tourny was over, I asked Cliff what kind of cue he was using. He took it out of his case, handed it to me and said,"just some cheap Chinese cue". And he was right. He won the tourney with probably a $80 cue if even that when new. And it was far from new at this point.
So, Cliff would get my vote on either best Canuckian ever due to his many accomplishments and still going strong.

Back in the early 90’s, I’ve seen all these older players play when we ran big events in Edmonton, AB (Lucky 11). I stay in touch with some of them. I will never forget Frenchie’s antics with balancing a chair on his chin and a five dollar bill on his nose. Don’t forget players such as Brady Gollan, John Horsefall and Paul Potier. I don’t know any of these new players, except Morra who I met breifly at DCC this year. My bud Brain Butler plays strong, he lived in ATL for a while when I moved here and then moved back to Edmonton. Also, Rob Phillips won a qualifier for the US Open and did well for his first showing. Sadly, a lot of the past and current players play poker more often. Wish there was more money in pool!

Shane Van Boening...when he's in Canada! :D

shane was in calgary for the big pro SML tournaments, cant remember how long ago, maybe 3 or 4 yrs ago,for at least 2 yrs,i dont believe he got in the top 4,i think archer won and maybe earl or dennis orcollo, think dennis made a little gambling with shane,of course dennis is hard action though i did see shane win 2 bar box sets in vegas the next year, shane made the finest cut on a shot i have ever seen

He was insanely good in the mid-90's. At that time noone in Canada really wanted any of him. Bernie at his peak was IMO a hair above the best of Canada today. But back then Even Bernie went second in calcuttas when Dan Louie showed up. That guy won every tournament in the NW for about a friggin decade. Boring to watch but I dont think he ever missed a shot in my time watching him in person.
i think jeff white, john jorgenson and did you ever see jimmy wyche play in his prime were all as good as bernie

1) Jason Klatt (Ive said this for a while)
2) John Morra

Im not sure who I would put as number 3 but its not Tyler or Edwin.

let me take a guess, they would be from the east?

Bernie ran into Ramil Gallego in L.A. on his first trip over from the Philippines. He got a pool lesson he will never forget!
i saw him also lose big to jeremy jones, also didnt like his side when he played alex when alex was ab 19

Bernie played Jeremy Jones in 1-pocket back in the 1990's when Jones was at his peak and considered one of the top players in the USA.

And yes Alex drilled Bernie when Alex was 18 for a grand. Bernie flat out shot bad that match and by the time Alex was 18 he was already a monster.

Little known fact, after Alex beat Bernie in that match he played another 18 year old from Calgary in the main tournament which was 10k for first place and lost. A guy named Ryan Smith who won the lag and 5-packed Alex before he got to take his first shot. Anyone can lose and Calgary had a seriously deep talent pool back then.

Like every other pool player on the planet Bernie has won and lost big matches against other great players. In his prime Jones, Alex, and Gallego losses do not a weak player make.

Honestly, how good was Vidas? Everyone I ask says he would beat Tyler.

Tyler played him about 5 years ago when both were shooting alot of pool and beat Mike for a grand, Vidas quit and Tyler went and then gave all his winnings to Alex in $100 increments.

IMO Vidas was a solid step behind Tyler when Tyler was playing serious pool.

i think jones was 9 ball at possibly cue club but i think jeremy was a great player then already,i admire anyone who steps up to play any of those guys,i always played and enjoyed pool for smaller stakes as i had a family who liked to eat regularily.jerry watson wouldnt play alex at same tournament and he was in his prime

iPhones suck, I am not removing that e.

The only match Bernie has told me about against Jones was the 1-pocket. Don't think they took place in Canada.

Well growing up in Ireland and only following snooker I would have to say Thorburn but I tell you Kirk Stevens match against Jimmy White in the 1984 masters was one of the best ever!! Also I did take a few beers off big Bill Weruniuk when I was 18 playing in the UK juniors in Harrogate way back in 1990. As for pool, I don't know but I did see Bob Chaperon playing in some Joss tourneys a few years ago -- another real good Canadian player. Wow a lot of great players have come out of that little country tucked away down there!
