It's time to recover my home table. I've had a lot of people tell me to save my money and buy the championship mercury ultra cloth. It plays as good and lasts longer. I do tend to find simonis is to fast for bar box tables. Any opinions out there. I mean even if they play close I'll save my 100 bucks and just by the championship? Any opinions out there?

I would like to preempt this by telling you to search this before anyone gets snappy with you, as this has been asked a billion times.

Championship mercury ultra cloth is what we use on all the bar tables where we play. They are Valleys with the heavy cue ball. Diamond uses simonis on all their tables but they do use the light cue ball. You get a little better ware out of the mercury and for the money its well worth it for the money you save.

Don't mean to correct you, but Valley don't use a "heavy" cue ball, and the "red circle" cue ball used on the Diamond tables...is not a "light" cue ball. Unless you have older Dynamo tables with a weight separator in it to separate the "weighted" cue ball...then you'd have to be using the oversized cue ball to be considered "weighted"...so choice of cloth has nothing to do with a cue ball being used;)

HI Glen what I was talking about is the cue ball with the magnet in them not oversized. The tables we have are old. I know Vally has changed their cue ball now but the people that own the tables have not updated to the new balls yet.

Valley made the "cats eye" cue ball first, then the mud ball...which NO ONE should be using today, because it writes...leaves marks all over the cloth....and then last...the Valley cue ball in use today....which is suppose to have a thin layer of metal shavings around the outside of the cue ball, covered over with a nice finish....none of these balls have a magnet in them, all they have is a small spring kind of star, or metal shavings....which is what pulls the cue ball towards the magnet that is mounted inside the table....which is how the cue ball return works. Weigh the cue balls, with the exception of the mud ball...they weigh the same as the object balls;)

I'd think about how much you have invested in the table, balls, cues and accessories, and the room the table is sitting in. Is saving $100 on cheaper, slower cloth worth the sacrifice? If yes, then go with the Mercury. If not then go with Simonis 860.

I agree with post #2 but anyway -
There's no way Ultra (napped cloth) plays "as good" as Simonis (worsted cloth) and you would have to
qualify what you mean by "lasts longer" as most people have the wrong definition for cloth wear.
Not knocking Ultra (an ok cloth) which is what comes on new Valley tables (actually Ultra Teflon).

There are other worsted cloths that play very well and cost less than Simonis ($170ish) and a little more
that Ultra ($85) if you're looking to save. One example is ProForm (worsted) at $116. Shop around.

Now the bar tables in my area have had mercury ultra on them for many years and I dont think it plays anything like simonis. Now Championship tour edtion 30/30 does play like simonis in my opinion. I think it is just about the same price though.

A mechanic in our area replaced 6 bar tables in our town with Milliken cloth and is using those tables as a test to see if we like the cloth and how the cloth last. I think it plays real close to simonis, but it has only been installed for about two months. I don't know what it will play like two more months down the road so I am not suggesting to go out and get it, but it may be an option for you. I am not too sure what the price difference is though so it may not be worth the chance.

Finally, I know that in todays economy a $100 bill is not something that is just thrown around. But I do believe in if a company is putting out a good product and is sponsoring/discounting back to the players and business owners within the industry, then they would get my business.

I hope you don't mean the "same" cloth for "many years".
I'd like to think whoever owns those tables changes the cloth every 1-2 years
or less depending on the amount of play they get.

Whoops, glad that you pointed that out to me.

All the bars in our area have the tables recovered once a year. Rarely is it because of the wear on the cloth, mostly because of having the end of the year tournaments from the leagues and they want to give the players new cloth to play on.

I bought Electric Blue Championship 3030 tournament Edition for my table to save a few bucks. I like Simonis but after buying the 3030, I'll always buy it. I clean my table and pool balls regularly and it still plays and looks new. I've had it about 8 months now with alot of play. I think the Championship 3030 is great. Ron

No worries. An annual recovering is a good rule of thumb as well as good for the players. Rooms/bars with heavy useage maybe a little sooner.
FWIW, 3030 "Tour Edition" is a good cloth but plays closer to 760 so really kind of too fast for a bar table altho many probably can't tell the difference.

Well I should have specified this also, Bar tables in our area are all 4X8's and not the 7' tables like every else. I don't know why that is, but that is how the Pacific Northwest is.

I'm gonna buy simonis.... I only have to recover my table about every 3 years so how much does that really cost in the end.

Thanks
