On many occasions, a great "safety shot" could be achieved by sticking an OB against a rail behind another ball.

How can I consistently make the OB stick to the rail?

Hussa,

sorry, but i m not sure if i am understanding what you re talkin about- perhaps you can post a *cuetable-pic* to specify it a bit.

There is no magic juju that you can put on the ball to accomplish this. The biggest determining factor is speed, followed closely by the contact point between object balls. Trying to put any spin on the ob in this case is counter productive because it takes some of the feel out of it. Speed and a rolling ob allow more control over the shot.
Its a touch shot that has to be practiced over and over from different angles and distances to be successful.

One of the factors that has to be reckoned with is cloth/felt. The newer the felt the harder to stick an OB to the rail. The older the easier.....SPF=randyg

a good speed control drill is to place the cueball on a diamond and push it to the next diamond, then the next 2 diamonds and repeat.

. Speed is main problem. Good practice is to nurse balls along the rail. Hit slowly, soft and don't really stroke the cue. If you are very close to ob stroking will probably double hit ob. Try moving the ob just 1 in. Or less. From corner pocket to side pocket how many times can you nurse ob? First effort will be about 6 or 7 times. When you can go 10 or more times your getting good. Get very close to ob with cue and just touch it. Pretty tough at first. Remember you always must make good hit.

One thing to help with very soft shots is to shorten your bridge distance, choke up on the cue, and elevate the butt of the cue a little bit.

But it still takes practice.

Are you saying to hit the rail for a legal shot each time, or just hit the ob??

I think the gentleman just wants a safety. Ob frozen needs cb to hit same rail after contact with ob. Not frozen ball either ball can hit rail. Maybe I wasn't clear with my first nursing suggestions.
