Finally A Full Cue Building Lathe

Can we see some cues that have been built on this equipment?

Hey Brandon,
Are you a cue maker? I have never seen your name come around here buddy...
I have some shafts, forearms and handles turned on this lathe and will try to post some pictures tomorrow.
The answer would be... Yep the lathe does the job it was tailored for...

New you-tube video

Here is the first cue building lathe with my custom H-Channel with Auto Feed, Taper Bar, router and much more.
This Cue Building lathe is the reason I designed the H-channel, the deep side wall dove tail makes it really easy to attach taper bar on the back side and auto feed Acme Rod and start and stop switches.
The head stock is the tall style 0.991" higher center than the regular taig headstock. I have couple of videos that will be uploaded to You-Tube some time today. Using a regular carraige with the side by side top slides gives the end user a much bigger turning radius, thus the router and router bracket are mounted directly on top of the spring loaded slide, which provides optimum weight distrubution on the carraige, and the top slide. it allows you to mount the router vertically or horizontally.
the custom pinion gear, and lead screw housing allow to add the 4" handwheel plus provides very smooth gear/leadscrew ingagement.
The auto feed motor is a custom high torque geared head 90 RPM servo motor with a built in speed control.
the on/off and reverse switch are mounted below the leadscew, which can be positioned anywhere along the bed.(perfect for making points)
The quick change tool post is a great addition to this lathe, it comes with 4 interchangable tool holders ( boring, cut off, and 2 regular tool holder 1/4" or 3/8")
3/8" 9-pc boaring set and 3/8" 5-pc indexable carbide cutters (pricing below)

How much to upgrade a taig 4' model with the lead screw and motor to run it. What needs to be done to the carrige for it to work?

adding lead screw autofeed is very simple on my H-channel, if you have a taig style U-channel its a bit more complicated, regardless, it can be done. just give a call @ 248-884-4469 and we can figure it out, i need a bit more information from you before I can give you a acurate quote.
Thanks

Newbie

Would this lathe be a good beginning cue maker lathe? I have always dreamed of making my own cues. I've never made one but am really interested in finding out how to get started.

Bassel lathe will do any thing your need and he is a great guy to deal too. Buy wood alot of it.

What else is needed to start building cues... I am very new also....

Use the search function, and put in various combos of words relating to cue building, or just start reading the posts in the "ask the cuemakers" section and keep going until you reach, like page 230. There is alot of info for beginners, if they really want to learn, it just involves a lot of reading.

Dave,

Not arguing, but I would add, the we learn by doing as well as reading. Some of that "doing" may end up as "do-do" (firewood) but we learn from those experiences as well.

Respectfully,

Gary

I fully agree, no aurgument there. I believe in both ways. The quoted poster was asking 'what else is needed to build cues', and I firmly believe an education thru a bit of reading, before flipping the switch on a machine, is an important 'first step'. A lot of questions can be answered by using the search function, and maybe even some injuries may be prevented too. Just my approach to things.

Lathe

Well i used to build custom harleys and have owned a 60" lablond makino metal lathe. Did very well making tons of stuff on it.. Just no cues....... I have lathe skills just don't have cue building skills...I pretty much have a full woodshop less lathe.. I have profilers planers flat bed belt sanders. Etc etc...

Also any one ever seen quilted hickory... Think im going to veneer the top of my gold crown with it...

Also what I'm concerned about is woods what woods ..... What wood are not used...... Etc etc.. Thanks

There are no secrets to cue building.
It's all based on time-tested & proven construction methods.
What differentiates one builder from another is the amount of tweaking and experimenting with these methods they've done to establish their personal building techniques.
We all use the same woods, and other mtrls., so you would think that all cues would hit & play the same; but they don't.
They hit differently because of the way that these matrls. have been brought together. The different combination of mtrls. and the personal build techniques used in their construction are what makes cues different from one another, thus defining the builder.

Every serious builder needs to determine for himself what type of cue he wants to build and what methods/mtrls he will use to reach his goal.
Figure-out for yourself what you want to build, not what someone else thinks you should build. Define yourself.
