balance point & weight

Hi,

I have simple questions that only you guys can answer.

I'm planning to have a cue built but i can't think of a design co'z i want to use purple heart for coring and i don't know what kind of wood to choose.

Here are my specs:

forearm & butt sleeve: it can be cocobolo, olivewood, bocote or goncalo
handle: maple/ leather wrap
weight: 18.5 oz
balance point: 19.5"
i'm not very particular when it comes to pin
58" cue

1. Is it possible to core the whole cue or just the front w/ PH and acheive the weight and balance point that i want?

2. What are the wood/s you can recommend?

I will appreciate all your advise!:):)

WHY do you want to insist that the Qmaker use Purpleheart for the core. If you have a Coco forearm with a Purpleheart core, you may have a problem getting that weight. Furthermore with a Maple handle, you may end up with a VERY front heavy cue. I would let the Qmaker decide what wood to use to get your specs...JER

No problem.
You might try Bob Danielson, he makes full length 6-piece radial spliced butts, that can have forearms and buttsleeves added to. He can dial the weight and balance in very well too.

not to sound rude but you have to choose the cuemaker and talk with him about materials. you are not the cuemaker so those types of decissions need to be made by him. you pick the looks he will pick the technique

Dave you said exactly what I was thinking & could not put into words...JER

Well. Jer u know it's nice to work closely with out customers. There is nothing nicer then a truly satisfied customer. But it's though when they try to get into things they just don't understand. I don't even pretend to know some of the things you guys do that DECADES of trial and error taught you. I'm approaching 100th cue.

I was gonna use redwood core to get it down that weight , oh well. :D

Try Bob Flynn from Denali cue. His cue construction is similar to what you describe. His AZ handle is : QMAKER

The link below is an example of his work.

It has to be possible because I own an old one piece purpleheart butt with a maple shaft made by John Kornkey(sp) that would meet the weight and is real close on the balance without any weight bolt but the joint pin. So using a smaller purpleheart core and a forearm and butt sleeve that are wood's lighter than purpleheart would indicate that it can be done. Do you want to try out the still straight 1 piece purpleheart butt to see what that feels like as it is for sale.--Leonard

Also check with Darrin Hill here on AZ about a full length cored cue

No one said it's not possible. We just said leave construction to you cuemaker. I core most softwoods with pph. It's stiffer then maple.

Cut him a little slack. By posting this, he IS trying to get with a cuemaker and talk it over. He put his specs out, its our job to talk it over and bend the specs with him to something that works. Notice the last 3 things he said I quoted. He asked if his core specs were possible...what woods we recommend...he appreciates all advise. This sounds like a reasonable customer for someone to me, even if he has some preferences (probably because he heard something on a <gasp> forum) that need adjustments.

All of my cues have a full length core--mostly PH. I can build what you want
except for the leather handle. I only make wrapless unless you want to call
"Dragon Skin" a wrap. Balance and weight are no problem. You pick the woods and leave the rest to me.
