Recut Points

I have read all the posts on recut point fixtures and they all assume that you have multiple lathes, mills, etc. One part of the alignment fixture remains in the lathe and one part attaches to the cue component getting the points cut in it.

My question is ...... what do you do to re index a part in the lathe if you only have 1 lathe. After you cut and glue in the base set of points, you have to turn them down and that requires breaking down your lathe set up. If you do that, you lose your index reference.

Am I missing something?

Recut points

I do not know how they do it on a lathe without a collet fixture. I do mine
on a mill. Since my pin is already installed, I screw an adapter onto the pin,
it stays there until I am finished. The collet on the spin indexer is keyed so
it always stays indexed. The adapter on the pin is indexed to the center adapter pin installed in the collet. If you take the butt out of the fixture you can re-install it , with precision, as long as you leave the adapter still affixed to the pin. Several ways to do this. This is one of them.
 
I've done them on a lathe as I do all my points on a lathe between centers, I have one lathe dedicated for this purpose. I use a dog center, It has a stud on the outside of the dead center. You cannot take the center out til the job is complete. I take the forearm out and sometimes have to adjust a little when it goes back in. I do one row of points at a time and turn the forearm and excess off then do the next row, etc, etc. In your situation (whammo57) it is what it is. Do it cause you love it, want to learn something from it and possibly invest in another lathe when you can or something you can dedicate to do points with. On this forum a lot of guys always concentrate on speed, don't look at the clock, concentrate on what you are making.

I've noticed that myself. It seems everyone wants to do the task, whatever it might be, quicker & quicker.
"I can cut a shaft in 5 mins." "Yeah, well I can cut one in 3."
So what, you got a date? The time it takes is the time it takes.
It seems that a lot of custom CMs want to run at the speed of production.
A good question to ask here is, are you selling at a production rate?
If not, then what's your hurry?

You should never be in a hurry to do your best work. Building cues is an art, not a race.
 
I do my recuts on a lathe. I leave the spur driver in one lathe that I cut the point grooves in and I use another lathe to turn them down between point cuts. If I only had one lathe and could afford to tie it up for a few days I could cut each point in without turning down flush between points. I have about ten lathes in my shop and there are days that almost everyone of them gets used for something. I like to glue my full splices up in the lathe so I know the points run straight. Points running dead straight and even are rare in full splice cues.

Hi Chris; What glue do you use for your recuts? Is it the same for all of your points & vaneers?...JER
