Willie Mosconi Quiz on why he did this?

...

I found these lying around if anyone wants to admire willie some more ...

ESPN was doing it back then, too, eh? It was 3-1 Lassiter, they took a commercial break, and it was suddenly 3-3 when they returned!

I'm not sure but my eduacated guess is this...........

This thinking is exactly what I've done for years, I call it left to right and right to left. I envision it as no different than the thinking I use when a ball is straight in.

My answer to your question is this;

I always try and approach every shot the same way, ''every time'' that's because the results from the shot will tell me the necessary adjustments I need to make, meaning I'll approach the shot a little more left or right to adjust to the conditions, whether they are internal or external issues. I learn a lot more from my misses than most other shots. In essence your always trying to get your pendulum swing balanced and natural to create a straight follow through. Your approach and my expression ''when your down your done'' exemplifies this principal, meaning your stance/body is now balanced properly.

Hi there Island drive,

The reason I don't teach this is that when you move from right to left or left to right one of these ways will screw you up more than help. It will almost certainly creat a problem that wasn't there in the first place.

But just the fact of moving as in cte it can solve some problems also.

Example is if you were right eye dominant and you were moving into a cut to the left. You would actually be better off coming into this shot from the left to the right. Coming into it from the right would tend to enable the left eye to work as the dominant eye which is certain disaster for your aim.

But to first understand this you need to know which eye is your real pool shooting dominant eye.

I just worked with Chris from New Hampshire and he was another right eye dominant player that thought he was left eye dominant. He is left handed.

In order to get him to see the shots correctly when cutting to the left I had to have him start his preshot a little extra to the right. This forced his left eye to stay out of the way and let his dominant eye stay in the dominant position but at the same time let the left eye shoot the shot which it is naturally doing.

This can be very confusing to say the least but this is why depending on which eye is dominant as to which way you need to come into the shot to see it properly. And i don't recommend this, I only use it during a lesson to help a player get the non dominant eye out of the way so the dominant eye can do what it does the best. Run the whole show. Direct the vision traffic.

And what fun this was working with Chris. Not only was he firing the shots in consistently while he was in the right position but he was totally amazed that as soon as he didn't do what should be done he would miss the the shot very consistently as before.

And as has happened many times before with players around the world that I have met, Chris would be in the, one of my best friends club, as so many other players I have met in this pool world of ours.

It's too bad we couldn't just have all these players that i have met here and there and have us all in one town. What a pool town this would be plus everyone would just have alot of fun being around alot of nice people and players.

Thanks for the post here Island Drive. And by the way if left to right works the best you are probably left eye dominant if this helps you see the shot the best. But is i was going to help you correct your shots to the right I would temporarily have you come into it from the right. But not a permanent thing for sure.

Have a great day geno............

Dustin elope to Vegas with the girlfriend?

Lou Figueroa

Now there's what's really killing pool and pool halls in America these days: girlfriends, boyfriends, spouses, yorkshire terriers.... All these damn excuses for not going to the pool hall.

Maybe they just have the wrong girlfriend, Yesterday my girlfriend had the day off, so while I was at work she did my laundry, fed my pets, and cleaned my house. When I asked why she said so you can practice pool when you get home and not have to be distracted by anything else. Then she made my supper while I went down stairs to practice.

Page 72............

Or at least the reference and page number for Geno's latest promo stays in Vegas ;-)

Dustin did text me but I don't do text.

Page 72. He said it to me over the phone but I'm sure you'll find it.

I think it was Winning Billiards.

Got to go. WIBCA tourny.

Talk to you later....have a great weekend guys...........

For your viewing pleasure, a little clip of Mosconi......
http://vimeo.com/4957545

I saw this clip a year or so back and was surprised no one caught that after the break out shot. The balls weren't anywhere close to where they were headed after the shot. Watch the break out and you'll see the 7 ball headed toward the upper left hand pocket but after the shot it's nowhere near that end of the table. I'm not putting Willie down this is just something I happen to notice last time i saw this clip.

A joke -- you have nothing, do you.

Maybe you made this up out of thin air?

In "Winning Pocket Billiards," page 72, there are a couple of photos and in the accompanying text (page 73) there is nothing approximating what you claim.

Without further information (or a call from Dustin) I would have to say you are a huckster.

What is bothering me

For your viewing pleasure, a little clip of Mosconi......
http://vimeo.com/4957545

There are several things about this video that bother me:

1. Why does Willie have to rack his own balls? Shouldn't Jim McKay or at least Jayne Mansfield be there racking? Even Ken Shuman at age 6 would be more of an honor.

2. Why would Willie quit a 526 ball run with 6 balls left on the table?

3. Did Willie know he was left eye dominant?

4. Is a 526 run on a 4 x 8 table better than 400 on a 4.5 by 9?

Dustin had his books mixed up.

surprise

I called Dustin and told him in a message that I put his info that he gave me on the internet and that I needed to get the page and the book name so i could tell Lou, the AZ watchdog, where it was.

Dustin told me he couldn't find it and that he might of got his books mixed up. Dustin is a real nice kid and a student of the game. I don't know how many books he has.

He tried to tell me that this page comes as close to it as it can and when he read it to me I wasn't too impressed.

Dustin told me that he will go through his books. It might be in there someplace or it might be in another book he has with info from someone else.

He felt real bad.

It probably wasn't old Willie that said this but I will get to the bottom of this and try to find out with Dustin who it was he misremembered as saying this.

Isn't that what Roger Clemens said that someone misremembered.

Anyway the bottom line is there are many thoughts and theories on how we should aim and so many different ways that players and teachers have tried to tell or show players that it is this way or that.

This technique of walking into the shot from the right or the left might seem to work sometimes but like I said it would cause more trouble than it fixes.

Oh, and by the way, I just tried my first predator 314 after I had played for 12 hours gambling for some pretty high stakes about 4 weeks ago. I won close to a couple thousand but was terribly drained.

A young man that was watching asked about my aiming technique. I told him i was too tired to work with him right then. He said I understand.

Well, I couldn't stand not helping him so I started showing him how to aim. During our little lesson I used his cue with the predator shaft on it. I could not believe how easy it was to shoot the balls in. I was totally amazed.

I didn't have to think as hard trying to judge this squirt or that deflection. I just aimed the cue like a gun and fired. No adjusting. And this was after I was dead tired , I could hardly still stand up.

I realize now that when I got tired I also got tired of all this adjusting i had to do with my normal wood shaft. And as a result my game would really go haywire when I would get tired.

So I bought one yesterday from Jerry at CR Billiards in Anoka, Mn. I took it to Shooters in Burnsville and commenced to playing in their Monday night tourny.

If you want to check on this to make sure you can call Jerry at CR.:D

I never hardly practiced with it and hardly missed a ball or shape all night.
A couple of player that have predators looked at what was going on and said they couldn't believe that I wasn't using one already.

I can't wait to try it tomorrow in this BCA state tourny here in Wisconsin.

I quit playing in 1999 because I was too sick to play. After 99 is when these laminated shafts started hitting the market. Since I started playing again in 2008 I thought it was all just a bunch of hype.

Guess what? It's not.

Hey Lou, have you ever tried a predator 314. Pretty sweet. It's like cheating.

Somehow I'm thinking your just using the old wood shafts and figure that works just fine just like I was. Am i right?

You need to try one of these and really give it a workout.

If your already using one disregard what I said.

I'm really tired. Just got my room set up here and need to get some sleep.

Have a good night or day or whatever it is. Geno...........

Most players don't know, but think they know............

From my teachings I am amazed at the great players that I have run into that had no idea which eye was their dominant eye. It doesn't matter what level your at it's just hard to tell.

You can do the normal pointing test and that will be correct for about half of the players. The other half will never be able to correct their aim manually not knowing which way to adjust.

They just get their from repetition trying to see it as good as they can naturally with no sight on their gun. And yes I said gun, because there is a spot just like the sights on a gun to get these eye to.

Anyway. I really don't know if he knew and I'm not going to ask Dustin.

I don't need Lou up my butt again.:sorry:

Maybe someone on AZ might know. if you do would you tell us.

Anyway it sure has been a fun little thread.

Have a great day geno............

What spots, there are none. Those spots are in your head only and no where else.

There are real points to line up when shooting a gun, the rear sight, front sight, and whatever you want to hit. These are real, you an touch them. There is nothing like this in making a ball.

I showed my daughter how to shoot. Simple to explain, and quickly was getting in the bull on her first day shooting. .22 pistol BTW.

That ain't gonna happen with ball making, why, there are no hard set points to use for aiming. It is all visualization and trail and error.

All these aiming systems are not true aiming, but visualization methods.

With any "system" you have to use your imgination to see these so called spots, or lines or sections and so on. There are no real world, you can see and touch reference points like sight on a gun.

Not every has the same level of imgination or cannot visualize, in great details, as some of these "systems" require.

Read the Pro1 answering questions thread to see my point. Some get it , and some don't. Some just are better are visualizing what is on the DVD then others and has nothing to do with being not motivated to learn.

I've said it before, There are no aiming systems, just visualization methods, including ghost ball.

I have a lot of books on pool too, sitting right behind me (along with Willie Mosconi's personal cue ball :-). Having read all those books, I don't recall ever seeing anything about Mosconi coming into his shots the way you ascribe and felt (even though you still managed to get six pages of promotional mileage out of a baloney premise) that it was important to keep the record straight on this particular issue, that's all.

And yes, I owned three Predator shafts at one time and played with them exclusively for a year and a half. Then I sold them all and have never looked back.
