G-10 - 3/8X10 - thread not standard

:(I had several cues converted to a 3/8X10 screw so that all the shafts would be interchangeable with all the butts. I could have used any material at the time and choose the green G-10 pin. Then I found that all the shafts had to be tapped multiple times to open them up so they would go on the this screw.
Now I've purchased a predator Z-2 and it won't work either. It goes on about 3 turns and then binds up.
It seems that this product has a none standard thread.
Is this typical of the all G-10 pins and if so is there a special tap for this pin or did my cue-maker get a bad batch.
BTW these are the lite green colored ones not the black if that makes a difference.
Any further info on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
 
The issue is usually the hole needs drilled a little larger and they should go on. Re tapping is usually not needed. That larger flat minor diameter might be binding.

I use a lot of G-10 pins, mostly black for aesthetic purposes, but I have
also used green. I use my standard 3/8-10 piloted tap with a .307" tap hole, same one I use on SS, brass and aluminum.
I then follow-up with my standard 3/8-10 tap. I use bees wax on the tap
threads. Your tap hole may not be dead straight. Drill with solid carbide for
a straight hole. Hope this helps. I live in Covina so if you want to come
by I will show you how I do it.

Thanks very much for the information. I'm not a cue maker or a machinist but like most people I try to educate myself as much as possible so I can make informed decisions on what I purchase. To that end I went to the Atlas site and found they have a couple of 3/8X10 screws in G-10. Both indicated a .308" minor diameter that I assume to be the diameter at the bottom of the thread. The black screw also indicates an "F" style thread. The natural green G-10 has no such indication. Is there anything pertinent to my problem in that? IE would one use a standard tap and the other is different style tap? Thanks for any info.

I've gotten G-10 from Atlas in black and green--same tap--same technique.
 
Friction may be the culprit.

Just wax up the pin a little and try it again. It may take a couple of attempts, but this has done wonders on many a similar situation.

I have even used chapstick when I didn't have any good paste wax available.

It works on tight brass and steel screws too.
 
I wondered about that myself. I have a varney with a 3/8x10 pin G-10 style and my aftermarket shafts won't fit. I forced a Pred on and now it goes on ok. I have a tiger x that absolutely will not go on, I've tried and tried. My break cue is a standard 3/8x10 and all the shafts go on it easily. The G-10 style seems quite a bit longer so I think the tiger just isn't drilled out deep enough to fit. :confused:

The 3/8 10 modified ( or SW style looking ) has a minor diameter of .308". It is smaller than the McDermott style 3/8 10 V-type threads pin ( .312 ) .

Kinda strange that shaft that's drilled for the McDermott style 3/8x10 fits fine on the SW style pin. The pred, tiger and shaft from my shooter all fit fine on the break cue butt. I managed to get the pred to fit on my shooter butt (SW style pin) the break shaft will fit but the tiger won't go more than 3 or 4 turns. if the diameter of the SW style is smaller why don't the shafts that are drilled for standard pins fit?

It's the other way around, Joey. The minor diameter on a McDermott-style pin is considerably smaller than 0.308".

Holy crap! Talk about slop.
It is .280" on that pin.
If that hole wasn't N-drilled then bored , it will be pretty tight for the modified one.

Heaven forbid if someone uses a bastard pin.
Talked to your buddy yesterday.
He is making all 10 and 11 tpi's now with 9.7MM ( .381" or so ) barrel.
