I am fascinated with using these high grade chalks even if it is just in my head. I heard one time that the type of materials in these chalks are potentially dangerous to your health, does anyone have any wisdom to this?

i have heard that there were things like lead in the old chalks (ie. masters pre flag) but have never seen any proof that any chalk can hurt you. right now in my case i have masters pre flag, with flag and blue diamond. i will say this, most of the discussion between them is hype imo. the blue diamond seems to stay on the tip a little longer and i have to chalk less, but not 4 to 7 dollars for two peices longer. when i am out the blue diamond i am going back to regular old masters at 6 bucks for 12 pieces.

Chalk is free every place I have ever played. I have a whole box of masters someone gave me. It's everywhere! Why would you pay for it? I will admit I do like a brand new cube. I wouldn't pay a nickel for chalk!

well, first off that chalk is not free. it's not for you to take home. it's to be left at the room for everyone to use. if a peson gave you a box that's different. and i buy my own because the cheap asses like you who steal it leave behind the hollowed out pieces of crap from idiots who don't know how to chalk properly, then i come along and there's nothing decent for me to use. guys like you are exactly the reason i refuse to share my chalk. i always love that. all the chalk in the room is crap or gone, i get to my tournament match and my opponent doesn't have any. "hey can use yours", answer is always nope - should have bought your own.

I use tan anyway, can't mix blue and tan you know :D

Pooped in your cereal?

Wow! Who pooped in your cereal this morning? I don't steal chalk, hell it's everywhere. And I'm not a cheap ass and stop talking to my old lady! You make a lot of assumptions in your post, all of them wrong. Hope your day gets better.

I've been using BD for a long time now. The new box I received 2 months ago, those new BD chalks now feel like repackaged Master. :( I don't know if they changed anything, but by comparing the box I purchased 2 years ago, the new BD chalks just don't feel the same.

Not with intention to steal (as I don't go around looking for pre-flag Master on the table), but if I see one, I'll most likely steal it and add it to my collection. I use BD most of the times, but sometimes I'd use pre-flag Master.

Free chalk

Chalk is almost always provided wherever you play. Even in hole in the wall bars there is usually a box sitting somewhere. Where I play regularly there are two pieces in the tray that holds the balls and of course occasionally on the tables themselves. I also find chalk in my cue bag and so does everyone else who is serious about their game. Thanks for cleaning up your hateful rhetoric, I thought for a moment there you were going to apologize. Lets make a deal here!!! I'll stop posting about free chalk and you stop posting about where is all the free chalk! Come on, let's shake on it!

i get your point, but most places also provide cues for people to play with.

Most people that i know prefer to use their own cue & most people that i know prefer to use there own chalk.

Sammy Hagar would've loved chalk, huh. I had always heard of lead in the chalk. And considering that on some shots dust kicks up, and certainly dust gets kicked up when the table is brushed or recovered, this could not be good. Mercury? Maybe. All I can say is this as a collector of old chalks: chalk went from being real chalk (very light) to Spinks' formula (medium weight), then to all other formulas. Some of the chalks that were not Spinks were EXTREMELY heavy. I think the heaviest feeling chalk to me is Cannon chalk from England. Age unknown but possibly 75 years old or more. If there was mercury in the chalk at some point, you'd think it would have been removed after they stopped using mercury to work on hats. It made normal people into "mad hatters." Stan Laner, a billiard dealer in Chicago, remembers when his father took him to the Keefe & Hamer chalk making facility and that he saw a bunch of women putting the labels on by hand. They would have handled a lot of chalk and thus a lot of mercury or lead.

Mr. Wiggles:

Aha! So you get your free chalk where I get mine! "Hole in the wall" -- specifically sheetrock -- is a great way to chalk your tip, albeit the chalk is white. I like to practice my punch-stroke this way, to get the chalk "started" (i.e. to get past the sheetrock's paper layer, into the white chalk). Then, when you need to chalk, just insert your tip into the hole in the wall, and chalk away. The problem is, the proprietor of the establishment usually doesn't like you making holes in his sheetrock walls, and will get you thrown out of the establishment. Best to do this in the restroom (equals many trips to the restroom -- your opponent will either look at you funny or else be totally sharked that you have to go to the restroom just prior to every shot).

:p

Just don't eat them and you'll be fine.

Eating chalk won't kill you...but it won't make you play better either.

Years ago at Breakers Billiards in Pittsburgh
Joe Lawrence was playing Mark Gregory.
He missed a hanger and ate a piece of chalk.
He played the rest of the session without washing up...
..his teeth and mouth were extremely blue..and it was running down his chin.
At the end he was VERY blue...and Mark got all the GREEN.

This info was second hand..be nice if Mark would confirm or deny

It may be league-geek territory, but I carry my own chalk so I always have one handy. (Just the basic pocket holder, not the full-out retractable model. :D )

Some of the places I play do have chalk on the table, but sometimes it's SilverCup. Sometimes all thats left is hollowed out junk. Or something that's been sitting in a puddle of beer. Or any of a bunch of other reasons to carry my own.

After all, it's cheap, right? I can afford to have one or two in my case. One in my pocket, and I don't have to go circling the table to get it. (How come it is when there are more than one pieces on a table all of those pieces find a way to congregate together? A mystery, for sure.)

I'm gonna try Magic chalk next time I decide to splurge, just for the fun of it. Not quite to the level of "trying it for the fun of it" with Kamuii chalk, just yet... :p
