I was thinking of breaking up some of my Cortland... obviously I do not want to do 50 yard spools if 7 yards is going on the ground. What is a safe wrap length?

#9 is .024 according to most charts....

Doing it as a frustrum (math) I am getting 40 yards on a 12" wrap.. but sounds light and I know it can vary.

I just measured the drop off a old used single 50 yard spool. There was 24 feet left over.
8 yards
So if it was very close to 50 yards, I actually used 42 yards on a 12 inch wrap groove.

Maybe 45 yards would be a safe number.

I am very interested in buying a few spools when you are ready.

Thanks
Lee

I think to get the most bang for my buck, I'd find me an Excel guru and build a formula where all you need to do is enter the length of the groove and the starting and stopping diameters. Sell it by the yard and per cue basis. It would be a shame to waste the stuff.

You can probaly also calculate it using the same information in a good CAD program.

Well every wrap is a little different. Especially the older cues.. 12, 11.5, etc..

1 1/8, 1 diameters

They are all slightly different.

Welcome to KJ-Soft.

It's basic math, you don't need a software program to do it and only a calculator if you're particularly lazy.

Find the exact midpoint of the wrap-groove length and measure it's diameter.
You've just created an imaginary cylinder and the taper is no longer needed in the equation. Pi(3.14159) times that dia. is the circumference around the cyl. or the length of the wrap needed to do one revolution around the cyl.

How many revolutions???
The wrap thickness is stated to be .024".
.024" goes into 12" groove length 500 times.
500 times the length of 1 rev. will give you the exact length of cordage needed to do a 12" on that cue.
Assuming your midpoint dia. is 1"xpi =3.14159"x 500 = 1507.8" or 131' or 43.6+yds.
45 yd should cover a typical 12" wrap.
Why Atlas and others sell a spool at 50yds is because not all cues are the same dia.

You read my mind KJ. Also some wrap grooves are longer than 12" is another reason.

Imagine the surprise if someone bought a spool and came up 1/2" short! That wouldn't work.

My first one was 39 yards... anyone make a shortie? :p

Might have to live with 50 yards... I measured two Bushkas and they were both over 12, as was a Palmer...

Well, that's just the thing.
Wrap groove lengths vary much more than do cue diameters.
That again is why Atlas and etc. give a little extra but they aren't charging $2/yd either.

Exactly, if I had 30 2500 yards spools of this stuff, I wouldn't care as much.

The way I see it, you don't have a problem.
Let the CM do the math and he'll tell you what he needs.
Sell it by the yd at say, $2/yd and that will put you in line with anyone else who's selling it.
Last I heard it was going @ $100 per 50 yd spool but price is up to you.

That could be a way to go. But I don't know how much I have. I was hoping to pop a few off, then I would know how much extra I had. But the consensus is a 12" wrap would be 45 yards. A 13" old school wrap will be 48, so I will make a 50. Might be the best way to go.

That's what I meant. If the formulas are correct, the cue builder could give you the length of the groove and the diameter at the A-joint and also at the back of the grip. If a guy only needs 42 yards to wrap a cue, it'd be a shame to throw away the other 8 yards.

Last I bought was 50 bucks for 50 yds, not so long ago. Never paid that much for it.
