Earl refused to be interviewed after the match.

Earl was actually very well behaved compared to the Shane match in which he was off his rocker crazy. Its amazing the guy can play so good and be so manic. I think Shane hit it right when he said that he thinks Earl has a hard time handling the pressure and its like a defense mechanism that he has developed. Either way he is fun to watch and is playing some of the best pool he has played in a long time. On that 10 footer he is going to be tough to beat. Line up the Pinoys cause it does'nt look like an American can beat him on that big table.

I think Darren Appleton challenged him too didn't he? An Efren/Bustamante v Strickland match on a 10-footer would be amazing.

Earl may have some strange ways but to get up and run over 100 balls when losing badly showed what kind of talent & heart Earl Strickland has.
He is a true champion but he is high strung and sometimes overreacts. This was a great pool match by both guys, and Johnny really did show a ton of class in his losing effort. I enjoyed Nick's commentary but Big Bubba was way out of line with his continued jabs at Earl, he should not have accepted to do the commentary if he hates Earl as he obviously does.

I agree, Putnam made himself look bad. I'm sure he has his reasons to dislike Earl, but he should have taken the high road and not talked about how much he dislikes Earl- I mean he stated this on many occasions- it was like- we get it! You don't like him, now analyze the game!

Yes, it is mind boggling how great he can play when acting so outlandish. I don't understand how he maintains his focus

I would really like to see Earl play Bustie on the 10 footer

Earl is an "idiot savante" on the pool table. While playing he functions at a genius level but at the same time he loses all sense of acceptable behavior.

Someone posted that SVB made a statement to the fact that Earl uses this behavior as a coping or defense mechanism when dealing with high levels of stress and pressure on the table. I think Shane hit it right on the head. Earl acts up more as the pressure he feels increases.

You can try and make excuses for Earls behavior during the match if you like (Personally I am done cutting Earl any slack on his behavior) but not giving an interview after the match showed no class. How much does he really care about the people that support him if he won't even give an interview for his fans that paid to see him play, and he f'n won?! How would he have acted after the match if he lost?

I like Putnam. I respect straight shooters who aren't afraid to say it like it is, however, I think he was wrong making jabs at Earl during his match. I mean Earl is the reason most people were in attendance and ordered the ppv. To disrespect Earl during his own challenge match with unnecessary comments was just wrong and showed little class.

Did everyone notice how Putnam was trying to pull Nick onto the Earl bashing bandwagon? Nick is far too intelligent and has way too much class to take part in that behavior. Everytime Putnam mentioned something negative about Earl, Nick brought the attention back to the match, Nick was definitely not taking the bait.

I missed seeing and hearing the commentary from Buddy Hall.

Here is a heads up, that jag-off Earl will act the same just like a little d-bag during the next big 10 Ball tournament in Dallas. Just the same old story, over and over. Then there will be another 20 threads filled with his nut huggers, excuse makers, star struck morons, apologists, and clowns that want to compare pool to golf :rotflmao1:

Nice to see Big Bubba Putnam tell it like it is and how the players have to resort to policing themselves by finally having enough of this clown.

Yeah, the guy is only one of the best American pool players to EVER live....how can you respect his game????

After the 10 ball last night they interviewed johnny. Earl threw a fit and said see, everybody hates me. They talk to him after he wins, but they didn't interview me after i won the 8ball. Mark tried to tell earl he was to be interviewed next, and earl said he didn't want to be interviewed. It makes me dizzy just thinking thinking about it. Earl is an amazing talent, too bad he has to be the way he is.

Everyone does hate him..Have you read the forums here? There is always an excuse why he wins, but playing well isn't one of them......I just can't wait to see who steps up to play him next and I wonder if most of the azer's will continue to bet against Earl:grin:

Watching the two great champions run racks today was very cool.
People were in attendance because of Earl and Johnny.

So, for some clown and second rate player to be bushing Earl is a joke. Nobody gives a shit if Putman is there or not.

jungledude...Forgive me for sounding dumb, but I haven't read the entire threads, and didn't get see any of the matches...but I thought the commentary was supposed to be Nick and Buddy. I read that in one Mark Cantrill's posts. Was Shawn Putnam substituted for Buddy Hall?

Nick asked Earl for an interview. Earl clearly walked towards Nick when Johnny said something like, "Sure you want to do an interview when you win." in a jocular manner.

Earl said, "You do it then. I don't even want to do it."

Johnny then said, "See Earl, I'll do an interview even when I lose." again in a friendly ribbing fashion with a laugh.

Earl probably took it like Johnny expected Earl to gloat over the win and then Earl took his time packing, lingering and I would have bet anyone right then 5-1 odds that Earl would have interviewed as guys in chat were pleading for them to ask him again saying Earl was just playing hard to get.

Meanwhile Johnny is interviewing and Mr. Professional Shawn Putnam is talking louder than Johnny saying, "There is your hero, refusing to interview." he went on to say, "refuse" and "interview" at least five more times.

Earl's interview after the Shane match was amazing. We missed out big time.

Earl is back and there is nothing you can do about it Putnam!

With the players wearing microphones you could not only hear the stress of a big money match but you could almost feel their heartbeats. The tension in the room was huge, not so much between Earl and Johnny but between the players and the table. The closer the guys got to the end of the match the more likely a mistake was going to happen.

Johnny handled the loss with humor and grace, he gave praise to Earl and showed sportsmanship. I am a Earl fan but JA won me as a new fan today. Johnny = Class Act.

I agree. Johnny Archer did handle his loss with grace and dignity. He was humble and did not let his personal feelings interfere with giving the pool fans what they want, even if he probably was feeling like crap immediately after this loss.

Johnny Archer +1
Earl Strickland -1

I read that Buddy Hall got sick and couldn't make it.

This seems to have happened several times to Buddy in recent times where he was supposed to show up for a pool happening and then he canceled at the last minute. I know he didn't make it to Vegas for an IPT tournament in 2006, and he would have been gifted with money just for showing up. Poor Buddy may be suffering from a medical malady we don't know about. I hope he's well and always wish him the best.

One thing for sure, whenever Buddy Hall does show up in person, it is going to be a special time. We should all cherish the times we see him on the tournament trail. He's truly an American pool icon in my book! :)

Seems funny to me how JA goes on and on in his interview about how he likes Earl, and would love to have Earl more involved in things if he could keep his cool (paraphrased, of course) and behave better. But he knows how Earl is and baits him anyway, with his comments about being interviewed after the match. And his "protege" is apparently off the hook against Earl, in earshot.

Shows how much they "want" Earl to be involved. They know how to push his buttons, because they know what he's likely to do.

Yes, Earl has brought almost all of this stuff upon himself. But as good as Earl the player is for this game, you would think that the self-appointed head of the players organization would go out of his way to try and give Earl the room he needs to show good behavior, especially if he's "behaved" better than in the past. (Again, going on reports here. I didn't see any of this match, nor much of the SVB one. Supposedly Earl wasn't too far off in the behavior dept this weekend.) He shouldn't have pushed his buttons, if he is all about the good of the game.

As for Putnam, well.... I hadn't heard of him before this weekend. I'm sure he's a great player and all that, but really who is he to be pulling this stuff? Oh that's right. He's one of JA's boys. I see. Wanting whats best for the game, JA.

Shawn Putnam is a good guy. Originally from Ohio, he moved down South several years ago and lives near Johnny Archer.

When you meet Shawn in person, if you don't know him, he has kind of a quiet, unassuming-type personality. He does have a lot of pride in his pool game and has tried very hard to eke a living in pool, like the rest of the aspiring pros and pro-caliber players.

Shawn's best pool year was 2005. He won a UPA tour stop, a now-defunct Hilton Tour event in Pittsburgh, as well as a Super Billiards Expo men's pro tournament. Shawn was featured on the cover of InsidePOOL magazine, which I'm sure brought him much delight.

In the American pool culture, I think there's two camps: the pool purists and the emotion-filled players. Shawn Putnam and Johnny Archer are both pool purists. Earl Strickland is an emotion-filled player.

Every pool player has a streak, and Shawn's streak was 2005. Both Johnny and Earl are still having moments of glory and streaking in 2011. Earl Strickland has enjoyed the longest streak of American pool glory than any other player, even Nick Varner, King James Rempe, Mike Sigel, and Allen Hopkins.

Johnny Archer comes in as a close second to Earl's streak. Earl's days of glory may be numbered now due to his age, though recent happenings show the opposite. Johnny's still got a lot of fire left in the jug. Professional players are competitive and have strong egos. Johnny and Earl are no different. ;)

For rock stars, getting on the cover of the Rolling Stone is the height of greatness, and for a pool player, getting on the cover of a pool mag is just as prestigious.

I lost any respect I had for Putnam....I could care less if I ever see him play....I would watch Earl play every chance I get...

If Putnam makes the Mosconi cup....I won't watch.

You support Joe's statement with your comments.

Yeah, the guy is only one of the best American pool players to EVER live....how can you respect his game????

Where in Joe_Jaguar's post was there any mention of Earls ability as a player? It appears that your justified admiration of Earl's accomplishments at the table precludes you from acknowledging his abhorrible behavior.
