Ok so in light of the other thread about ferrule glue, I decided i'd like to know exactly how strong cyano is for ferrules. I just now glued a ferrule on my playing cue with cyanoacrylate, AKA super glue. It's a 15/16" long melamine ferrule threaded on 3/8-10 with a .375"x.200" shoulder at the base. It's a through ferrule, not capped, and is 13.08mm. I have hard tip on it, the same tip I always play with. It's exactly how I have installed all of my ferrules for almost 10 years, only this time I used super glue.

I have used numerous epoxies, yellow wood glues, white glues, & polyurethane glues. I personally noted no certain difference in any of the glues in terms of durability or performance. I usually use titebond-II with melamine because it dries fast & leaves a clean look. I also really like the gorilla wood glue because it's white & strong like titebond.

I will break, play & jump with the cue as normal and report what I find, unbiased. I'll abuse it. I plan to make some wood joints with various types of glue & put it to the test that way, too. I'll pit it against wood glues, epoxies, & poly glues. This test is for me, so I know. I'll do my best to be totally thorough & post up results as I see them. Should be interesting. And if anybody else would be interested in doing their own testing, i'd sure appreciate being able to compare results & get insight from other points of view.
 
Like I said in another post , I 've used Loctite 454 for years and also slow cure , 24 hr , epoxy that is made for gluing steel together . No problems !!! No difference in play . Good luck ....:cool:;)
 
There are new cyano glues being developed all the time.
There is a new generation of high temp cyano's now, that have a service temp of up to 150C and being capable of 200 C for short periods of time.
But most cyano's have max strength in the 10 C , and reduces before that and reduces after that.
You need to see the technical data graph to see if that is what you want. They also drop off in performance over time and are effected by moisture.
There are also companies now that will make a batch of customized super glue to give you the properties you are after.
 
Ok, so as mentioned I glued a ferrule with cyano on my own cue to see how it would work. I used 5-15 second cure BSI, pretty common stuff. I played a tourney with it & it played great, as expected. Now time will tell how long it lasts. That's what i'm unsure about. Gonna do a few other tests, too. But from what I can tell so far there's nothing faulty with cyano.

I will say that I won't use it for ferrules. I'm pretty certain with my ferrule technique it doesn't matter what adhesive I use. Cyano is mega expensive compared to just about any other type of glue, and if it doesn't do something better, then it doesn't make sense to use it. Thus far my suspicion that it is every bit as strong for MY application as any other glue has proven true. But it's not stronger & time doesn't make a difference to me. The strength of my ferrule install is in the deep threads on thick tenon, and once tightened down the glue is nothing but thread lock. Not sure how it would work on a press fit ferrule, and don't really care because I don't use them. But I suspect it would be just fine, especially if you get the tenon flat bottomed on the shaft. More testing to do yet.
 
I've used CA glue for ferrules since I started working on cues. I do not use it on any of the melamine family, only the "plastics." ABS, PVC, Polycarb....non-porous materials. I have NEVER had an issue. There are just some materials that will not work with epoxies.

that's one thing to consider for sure. Price matters.

Good luck with your testing, and hopefully you could also try it on a non-threaded (slip on?) ferrule like I intend to to someday to see if it works alright.
 
I feel that the impact and vibrations of playing will break down CA glue over time as it gets brittle. I use structural epoxy for everything in my cues. The new Gorilla impact tough CA is now what I use on tips. This might be good on ferrules as well.
