I was reading an article for the WPA 10 ball championship, and it mentioned that Antonio Lining was the # 1 rated player in the world. No disrespect intended, but I was curious as to his credentials that would make him # 1. Somebody cure my curiosity.
 
Thanks. I wonder if he has won any of these tournaments. Looks like he's there because he played in all of them and finished high, but didn't necessarily win.
 
Correct. Lining is No 1 in WPA rankings which are based only on results in WPA sanctioned ranking events.

You have to remember, being ranked #1 in the world, and being the best player in the world, are often not the same thing (no disrespect intended to Lining).
 
I'm sure he is a great player, but for me, the number one guy is the one who wins the most tournaments. I wonder who that might be in the last twelve months?

I think which tournaments the person has won matters as well. But winning is not the only place that matters. Suppose A wins 5 of 20 tournaments, and finishes out of the money in the other 15. B wins 4 of those same tournaments, and finishes 2nd in the other 16. It seems to me clear that B should be ranked more highly than A.

So who should be ranked #1 is more complicated than who wins the most tournaments.
 
Well, Mika was on fire in tourneys, but has tailed off a bit. It must be amongst SVB, Mika, Orcullo, and maybe Corteza
 
The only thing I can add to this is I'm looking for the line of people who want to play him, chirp chirp chirp. Oh wait there is no line, the dudes a beast and has one of the highest $ gears I've ever seen.

In the current days of Alex, Shane, Earl, Fransisco, Efren, you all forgot about Antonio.
 
lots of ways to rank players, but for me, who wins is all that matters. Not who finishes 2nd or out of the money. The most important match is the one I'm competing in. With the quality of players out there, to win any tournament is a major accomplishment. If one player has won 5, and another four, I'll go with the one who has 5.

If player B has beaten player A 80% of the time they've played, do you still think player A should be considered the better player of the two?
 
If player A wins more tournaments than player B, and player b wins most of their one on one matchups, then somebody out there is beating player B and not beating player A. Maybe someone got fortunate on the matchup, but over the long haul of evaluating a year or more tournaments, as they say, the cream rises to the top. If player B is really the better player, he should win more than A against the field.
As for the AZ money list, I assume this is just U.S. tournaments and also recognized majors, not the Euro tour and Asian tour. I can't say that one player is definitely # 1, but Appleton, Orcullo, Immonen, and Souquet are the ones that come to mind that are in the discussion. Antonio Lining is not.

Souqet, Immonen, Appleton ?????????? are you sure.????

Souqet and Immonen even not place top ten and never won any WPA tourney this year. How come you can get their name on your mind.. it's weird.
Appleton place on 10 rank Okay, but he also never win any tourney this year.

You mention on your post that a player must be a champion to be consider as the best player and you pick those name to us, why?

Orcullo can be mention since he is a champion for 8 ball WC 2011. Bustamante won a 9 ball WC 2010. Chang Jung lin won Beijng Open 2011. Thorsten Hohhman won Phillipine open 2011. and Chang yu lun was a champion of China Open 2010. so who would you pick..

If only a champion of a tourney is what you consider a top rank then it's very hard for us to decide who's the best.

My Opinion is yes Antonio Lining deserves to be place in the first since he is the most consistent player plays on WPA tourney...
 
I mentioned those names because they have won tournaments in the past and recently. Appleton is the reigning US open champ, Souquet has won 2 or three tournaments on the EuroTour, Immonen is a consistent winner, and you've already mentioned Orcullo's accomplishments. The others that you mentioned come to your mind, and rightfully so, because they have won, and are a threat to win in any tournament they are in. As for Mr. Lining, I am sure he is a great player, but what has he won? Somebody make a case for him besides he that he is consistent. If he has won tournaments, make a case. If he hasn't won, he's no better than number 2.

Stop trying to defend your position...you are wrong, based on ranking ratings.

Points are assigned, based on finishes and the winner have be the most points, AKA be the most consistant finisher...which is certainly a definition of 'the best'. In fact, it is the definition the WPA uses.

Sir, i believe that this thread will endless if we consider the champion on the past. Some American will pick Earl strickland, Some asian will pick Chao fong phang and Efren Reyes. Some Prefer Alex P. and Mine are Yang Ching Shun. And i believe Some will pick ANTONIO LINING.

Well i have a little story about Antonio Lining. My Pinoy friend told me a couple week ago that right now in Phillipines the King of money game is ANTONIO LINING. I don't know whether this is a fact or just a rumour (Maybe some Pinoy member here can give us an information). Now we are talking about Phillipine, a place that even a third grade player here have every chance to win a championship and Lining is still one of the best.
