Hi,

I've always been wondering about how stiff the hit of cues made by top-listed or at least recognized cuemakers and will love to put it together for easy viewing.

So here it is, share your experiences! From a range of 1-10, 1 being the softest and 10 being super duper stiff. Description of stiffness taken from StrokeofLuck: "Stiffness seems to be more how the shaft reacts and hardness seems more like the resonation you feel in your hand and arm."

Ok these are the ones that I can pick out at the back of my mind. If you have any more other recognized cue makers, feel free to add to the inexhaustible list and add long commentaries to each individual feel of the cue by the cue maker as well.

Thanks! :D

I don't have much experience with your list outside of just Scruggs and Jacoby. I would say the Scruggs I owned had a pretty soft hit....actually I would describe it as cutting through a CB like a knife through butter. That is how smooth the hit was.

I've never owned a Jacoby, but played with a few and the hit was certainly harder than a Scruggs. That is not to say the hit was hard. I would describe his hit as crisp. The same goes for Carolina Customs.

I'll give Scruggs a 3
Jacoby and Carolina Customs a 6

I had a Joss that hit like I was using a bare 2x4 compared to any cue I've used.

I've never tried to categorize a hit as soft or hard because it's so subjective. This is why I say my old Scruggs hit smooth like going through butter, or the Carolina I have now has a crisp hit to it.

I will say that the Scruggs I had is the only one I shot with that made me say wow. The hit of his cue is mesmerizing.

I would suggest that people list their ratings based on cues they owned and played with rather than ones they just hit a few balls with.

I do agree with John. It will be the best judgement since the owner will have the most exposure to his/her own cue.

Please do feel free to use the template given as well. It looks easy on the eye ;)

Thanks guys

A cuemaker builds the cue like the way you want it-- if i buy a cue-or a shaft, then the cuemaker will manufactures it like I want. No matter if it should be stiff or not.

and btw. Scruggs usualy builds for sure NOT a soft-hitting cue. Sure it s subjective-but Scruggs for sure on the stiffer side (if he builds it the way HE LIKES).

I think the problem with trying to poll something like this is how people define stiff or hard hits. To me they are two completely different "feels" but I don't think I can put them into words. Stiffness seems to be more how the shaft reacts and hardness seems more like the resonation you feel in your hand and arm. With that lame description out of the way I can tell you that the Mike Stacey I had with a curly maple shaft was the stiffest mutha I've ever hit with.

Two shafts two differences

You may not be able to categorize the hit for a few reasons. Most makers offer different joints or make ups. I own a Schon with an implex joint I would say is a 5. I own one with a steel joint I would say is a 6 or 7. I also have a different shaft with a straighter taper that is along the lines of an 8.

arknova...Are you trying to say that Dan Janes doesn't make ANY custom cues?

The "hit" of a cue...any cue...is subjective to the individual, and as such cannot be 'catagorized' or loosely defined. As mentioned, the "feel" of a hit varies with shafts, joints, and tips. Two different people, owning the exact same cue, with the same specs, will frequently have opposite opinions of how the cue plays.

joss is currently a production line. I'm listing custom cuemakers. Mezz and pred are just rough feel gauges.

I understand that there can be a lot of cuemakers out there that I didn't list it down but if I were to do that, I will spend an eternity updating the list. The list is mainly about the hit of the cue from cuemakers that I personally will want to know about.

Granted that there can be differing opinions, at least I have an idea of how the cue hits from the general crowd. You can always cross-refer or get a general consensus regarding how a cue from a particular cuemaker usually hits. Such information I feel is really valuable since it's not really out there and personal opinions are usually the better choice as compared to marketed opinions.

Hope you understand where I'm coming from regarding what I describe of the list yea

Ron Kilby of Carom Cues makes a stiff cue.
Of course that is to be expected as he specializes in carom cues.

However I had one made for 8/9 ball and its very responsive as well as stiff. You wont find a wimpy shaft by him..

I don't think you can make an across the board determination. I depends largely on the tip and the shaft profile. I have a Cog. Shaft one has a pressed water buffalo and it hits stiffer than a preachers .... Shaft two has a real thick le pro and it hits very soft. Same cue and same shaft profile. Two very different hits and feels.
